Camping?
Fri, 11/03/2006 - 22:38
Okay, I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not a camper. For me, camping is staying in crappy hotels like Motel 6.
BUT, if I plan to go backpacking in Europe, I need to plan accordingly. Have any of you tried camping out? (in the full sense of a tent, a sleeping bag, and twigs poking you all night long) I know hostels would be easier, but would you ever reccomend camping? Is it even safe?
I’m hoping to have a travel buddy (traveling aa young single girl is not safe, and doesn’t sound like much fun anyway.), so I won’t be camping alone…

Fear not – camping can be a blast!!!
I’ve stayed at dozens of European campgrounds (France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Czech Republic, Portugal, Iceland,) and really have never had a bad experience. Many of the places have bars and/or discotheques, restaurants, swimming pools, etc. You can either pitch a tent, or rent a cabin/caravan for the night (if the weather isn’t cooperating). I’ve met tons of people from all over the world in campgrounds – main reason being that you’re more likely to socialize rather than hang out in your tent. Some campgrounds may be a ways out of towen, so it’s best to take that into consideration (as transport back at night may be a problem). Wouldn’t recommend leaving valuables unattended in your tent, but then you really shouldn’t do that in hostels or hotels either. Camping out will also extend your budget – something all too important for the backpacker.
Hope this helps!!!

Screw camping its a good alternative to save money, but ur not saving that much. You have to walk a mile to take a piss and even take a shower. In your tent your pretty much alone, and even if u decide to get a cabin its pretty boreing. If i were you I would stick to hostels at least you could really meet people in depth and have way more fun.
There are cheap places to stay if you decide to hike the Alps. You won’t have to carry a tent. Just research the internet for info.
Eat the food, use the wrong verbs, and end up getting charged double.
