Camping in the Outback
Wed, 03/02/2005 - 16:11
Hi,
I will be camping in the Outback with some friends for 5 days 6 nights during June of 2005. We will be flying into and out of Alice Springs, renting a car and touring sites in the MacDonnell range.
If anyone has any experience with this and can offer some tips, special sites, or must-sees besides the well-known ones I’d appreciate all the help. Importantly, how easy is it to set up camp near roadways? In otherwords, park our car off the roadway, walk into the brush a setup camp for the night. And will snakes be an issue in the winter month of June?
Thanks,
Riad

bring netting to keep those stupid flies out of your eyes when you’re hiking, and your mouth while you’re eating. or buy those nerdy netting hats.
i’m not sure there’s a noticeable difference in alice springs seasons, but don’t take bill bryson’s harrowing snake stories to heart. there ARE snakes out there, deadly ones even, but as long as you don’t go pulling their tails, you’ll be fine. annie’s place (a A.S hostel runs tours, which may or may not be cheaper than renting a car. advantage is that you have a guide. you can imagine the disadvantages)
