Can you still access bars/smoke rooms at hostels if you're not staying there?
Mon, 07/26/2010 - 11:18
Will be in Amsterdam Sept. 18-20ish
I like to have my privacy and proper sleep so I was thinking of getting a regular hotelroom, however seems like being at something like the Flying Pig would provide great opportunity to meet people, which I’ll definitely need since i’ll be going solo.
I am leaving from Toronto with $1000 for 16 days

Not sure, some hostels are more relaxed in security than others. I had friends staying in other hostels in some cities and with one hostel I just walked in and nobody batted an eyelid, but with another one you had to have a keycard to enter the main door – so it varies place to place.
I would recommend just staying in a hostel personally, some offer single rooms as well.
I was thinking of that, but in Amsterdam its virtually impossible to find one. Any recommendations?

Try hostelworld.com – they list the majority of hostels and room choices available.
The Flying Pig will not let you in if you are not at their hostel, they have a revolving bar type thing to make sure only people staying at the hostel are coming in. I would recommend staying there if going solo just for this room, it is fantastic to meet people and have a nice smoke.
