Canadian Rockies
Thu, 11/25/2004 - 17:32
We are thinking of going to the Canadian Rockies in early June next year. Probably renting a car, staying in hostels and motels, interested in sightseeing and moderate hiking.
Is the area good at that time of year? Is there still a lot of snow lying, will any routes still be blocked?
perhaps a more specific location in the canadian rockies would get you more answers.
Hey Peter, we were out in Oregon and Washington at the end of May and there were still a few roads closed up in the moutains. I think it would depend on how rough the winter was! I mean we went up to Mt. St.Helens and we got to the second to last look-out point and the rest of the road was closed, lucky for us while we were inside the ranger came in to say that they had just opened up the road and we could go to the top! So it’s pretty touch and go! I would say that Mid-June would be the better option, you would hate to head out there and not be able to go where you would like!
The rockies are gorgeous all year round… apparently there’s lots of golf if you’re into that too… but the towns are great and the view is amazing… but really, the winter is when the mountains are REALLY alive. There’s still snow in the summer but it’s only in the peaks.
If your going to The Rockies go to Banff or Jasper!!!!! The 2 most beautiful places in Canada.
In all likelihood there will still be snow, but all the main roads will be open. If you hike up, you will encounter snow, but it varies year to year. Go…before the glaciers melt. It is breathtaking in Banff-Jasper National Park.
You will have absolutly no problems. All the roads will be opened. Theres very few days in the winter that the roads are closed and if they are its for a few hours. June the roads will be bare. Banff and Jasper are the two main places. Theres alot of National parks in the Rockies. You will need to purchase a park pass if you wish to stop in any town in any of the parks. Their not expensive and you can get them at any town in the parks. The Icefields are cool that time of the year. There is no skiing if thats what your looking for. The season will end in April – May. Hope this helps you out. Easy bus transportation between the cities on Grayhound bus lines. Not sure on the prices but go to grayhound.ca. You can also go to Calgary and rent a car. Banff is only 2 hours by car from Calgary.
I agree with the above comments. Anytime of year is agood time to go to the rockies both in British Columbia and Alberta.
Don’t miss Lake Louise if you head out that way.
