Do U.S. cell phones usually work overseas? A friend came back from France and his couldn’t get through. I’ll be going to France in May and would like to figure it out. If yes, what are the rates like? All the same in the E.U. or depends on the country?

There are a couple of issues. It depends on if your phone is a GSM phone or not. that is, can it operate on the frequencies used for cell phones in Europe? If you have the user’s manual for your phone and it says it works with GSM or is a tri-band phone it will work; you’ll be able to make and recieve calls.

Now, another issue is cost, and this depends on your carrier back home. When I had T-mobile it was $0.99 a minute in most of Western Europe, my new carrier Cingular charges more

As said in the above post, Europe has a different system than the U.S. Another idea is that you need a multiband cell phone but most regular mobiles don’t have that. I never travel w/o my laptop – I just prefer that mode of communication over the phone. My mom makes me buy prepaid minutes through onesuite.com anyway even though she seems to need them more than me.

Depends on which carrier you have?If it’s a gsm phone (cingular/att,t-mobile) you can get them to unlock your phone for a short period of time and then change the sim card when your abroad to the local sim card.
