Changes to Eurotrip.com...
Wed, 03/28/2007 - 14:25
Hey all,
I guess its about time I introduce myself on here. Im sure some of you have noticed quite a few changes happening to Eurotrip.com, including a new menu and an updated look and feel. Well I am the developer who is doing it.
I will be continuing to update the content and functionality of the site over the next couple months, but the overall goal is to completely revamp the site and build something that caters to your needs as a traveler and a member of the eurotrip community.
I hope you all are enjoying the changes. If you have any comments or suggestions feel free to msg me.
Cheers,
Will

Welcome to the boards Will!
First hand I can tell everyone what a great job Will’s doing. His designs are awsome and everything he has in store for us is very cool. Keep up the good work!!!!

Thanks to you, too, Mim.
I appreciate the efforts of both of you.[

Wow, that was strange. All I did was put a happy face on my post and the coding was weirded out. Hence the edit.
I guess the upgrade is still “in progress?” Oh well. The site is much improved, no question about that.
ya we have been having some issues with the forum software we are currently using. I have noticed a few things that I am not real happy with. when I rebuild the site I may integrate a better forum software.

love the new look, keep it going
The site is definately much better. One thing to look at though, sometimes I log in and go to the next screen and suddenly I’m logged out. I log back in and go to another screen and I’m logged out again. ??

That is a bit strange and I had not seen that problem. I dont know what your computer situation is, but I would be interested if the save cookie fixed your problem. I will look into that when I have a bit of time.

Thanks swill. It’s happened on two computers that I know. The computer I use mostly is in the campus computer lab. I use E.7 and after each use I delete all history, cookies, etc.
PS. Do you know of a good OSX tutorial and one also for sql? Thanks much swill!
Also the gay and lesbian forum is just taking up space. Can we delete it or change it to something else?

Thanks for the info. The school computer may be locked down in some way that may be messing with the way the forums are built. I will check into into it at some point to see if I can come up with something.
In term of OSX, sorry I don’t use a Mac. I use a version of Linux (Ubuntu).
For SQL, I always just search for anything that I don’t know. I think if you just google ‘sql tutorial’ you will probably come up with something that is pretty good. I would recommend http://www.w3schools.com/ for most of your basic questions. They have an SQL section http://www.w3schools.com/sql/default.asp that you may want to consult.

I agree. It was never very popular and tends to attract spam. Unless there is serious objection, I think we can delete it. Anyone want to weigh in?

I think that is your judgment call, just email me if you do so I can remove it from the sitemap.

Instead of New Member, Member, etc…how about something with a little more flare?
And if you have any ideas for a javascript vertical menu for my project. I have a couple of sites I’m using but would like to see if you get any different hits.
Thanks-

It never was really popular, true. I actually feel the same way about the family travel forum. Ditto the Museum forum, though I like having it. It just seems like so many of those types of discussions end up happening in Favorite Places, which seems to work out okay. I personally think the Solo Women Traveler forum gets enough hits to be a keeper.
What about the Great Outdoors? Kinda slow there…
I agree with you, Cil. They’re all slow. Instead of a forum for the rest of the world, how about forums for Africa, North America, South America, Australia/New Zealand, and Asia. I don’t know if we would get many posts for Antartica unless Don can get us some cheap flights there.
What do you think about new names instead of Member, etc.?

Im going to let mim take care of the forum changes since he is more in touch with everything that goes on here.

I have added a couple things that I think you all may enjoy. We have a lot of content on the site that I feel has been very difficult for people to find. In an effort to make the content easier to access I have added two new features.
Sitemap:
In the Resources section you will now find a sitemap. This page will give you the first 3 levels of links for eurotrip.com. This should help with navigation if you are not exactly sure what you are looking for.
Site Search:
I have integrated a google search into the site so you can search the entire site using keywords. Simply click on the Search Eurotrip image in the top right of the page (or access it through Resources) and enter your search. This will search the forums as well as the links directory and all of the other content on the site.
Hope you enjoy!!!

All great ideas.
So, I moved all posts from G&L, Family, and Museum and Art to Fav. Places.
Thanks for everyone’s input!!!!

We need the faq back so we can use proper tags.

It was part of the forum. I used it to see how to use
. It had maybe 20ish questions that it answered.

Mim takes care of the forums, so he will have to look into this because I am not really sure what the situation is.

No. It was part of the old forums. Here is a link from 2002 showing someone refering to it.

Here is a link to a post that gives a link to the faq that shows how to embed links.

And can we replace some of the deleted forum with a language forum and maybe add some sort of reference to newspapers around the world?

I’ll take a look and see if the new software supports it.
As for the newspaper and language forums, they are all great ideas, but right now we’re going wait until the rest of the forums all have a good number of posts. We don’t want it to be too empty — we already got rid of three forums because of that.

The FAQ were indeed handy.
Ok, here’s what I found.
Not sure why it’s not in the header, but the address for the FAQ is: http://eurotrip.com/…
I’m going to try to get this in the menu asap.
Thanks for the heads up!

thanks for finding that Matt.

Thanks mim. Sorry I wasn’t much help in finding it. As I type, I remember the link being posted just after the swap to the new design.

When I try to post using IE7 I get
Either the feature is disabled, or you do not have sufficient permission.
Then I log in again and enter my post then get this:

If you already have cookies enabled and still experienced the problem, see problem #2 below for other possible causes. [/blockquote] Problem #2:[blockquote] Your server experienced problems and was forced to restart. Restarting a server will erase all session data and our protective mechansim had no choice but to drop your HTTP POST because we had no way to identify you without valid session data.
Many forum administrators host their forums on shared servers, on which could have more than 200 sites hosted together. Sometimes the server has to be restarted because some badly written programs on other sites may drain the CPU/RAM and cause the IIS to restart itself. This is unfortunately an inevitable situation that many site administrators and its users have to face from time to time.

I have made some changes to the way that this forum software is set up. Please let me know if you continue to have problems…
