Cheap and Safe Hotel in NYC
Wed, 02/07/2007 - 19:36
Me and my friend are going to NYC. I was looking for some cheap and safe hotels in NYC. Close to subway, downtown and somewhere safe.
any ideas?
I have never been in New York before. so any help would be great

Ahh, maybe this should be posted in the Rest of the World forum.
Try the Chelsea International Hostel. Don’t have the details right now but do a search on Google and their homepage should come up.
Great location, reasonably priced and has a big kitchen.
Hey. I don’t really know anything about any hostels in NYC, but I do know neighborhoods. I just did a quick search for you and this place is in a neighborhood I hang out in all the time. The East Village is safe and it’s got tons to do. Alot of stuff is in walking distance.

I live in NYC, so I’ve never been to these hostels but have heard good things:
Jazz on the Park
Supposed to be a very good hostel. It’s located near central park in Harlem*

[=“1”]*Harlem is actually very safe right now and somewhat pricey.[/]
Times Square Roomates
On the outskirts of Times Square near Port Authority Bus Terminal. Very close to a lot of the sex shops. Despite this, it is actually a pretty safe area and just a few blocks from the center of time square. Thier website is pretty extensive.
Big Apple Hostel

The last one I’d choose out of the three. Whenever I walk past here it doesn’t seem very inviting, but If you’re stuck I’m sure it will do.

harlem….safe? When did this happen? Im not from NYC but live about 60 miles outside on Long Island. Im not a regular nyc visitor….but im skeptical.
I should rephrase — some parts of Harlem are very safe now, like the area where Jazz on the Park is located. Believe it or not, the current gentrification of Harlem is causing some parts to be completely torn down and replaced with luxury high rises which I think is a shame. On the other side of the coin, the Harlem Renaissance has really helped clean up and preserve the area, but of course there are still areas that are dangerous and gritty. Regardless, I wouldn’t feel unsafe in most (if not all) areas of Harlem during the day although at night I would be extra cautious in certain spots.

You should be fine — one of the safest areas in the city.
