CHEAPEST way
Tue, 03/09/2010 - 05:08
Hello,
I would like some recommendations on the cheapest way to get to a few places.
London to Paris
Rome to Barcelona
Barcelona to Dublin
We have a 5 country rail pass for the rest of the countries we are seeing, but are not sure about the best/cheapest way to get to these three cities. We have looked around a bit. We will all have pretty good sized backpacks, so I was afraid how much some of the airlines would charge to carry on/check in. Please help! Thank you!
I am traveling for 24 days
I am leaving from Los Angeles with $2000 for 24 days

For your dates the cheapest flight I see from London to Paris is flying Easyjet from Lutton to CDG for $41, but be sure to factor in transport costs to and from airports and fees if you plan to check bags: http://www.easyjet.c… You can also take the train for $57 each if you book early, and it will end up taking less time than flying: http://www.eurostar….
For Rome to Barcelona fly Ryanair to Girona (north of Barcelona) for $40 then bus down to Barcelona. http://www.ryanair.c…
I also think Ryanair from Girona to Dublin will be your absolute cheapest option.
Check these sites for cheap flight info:

Thanks for the response. After looking a little bit, I think we will end up taking the Eurostar from London to Paris just because it is quick and it goes from city center to city center. It also isn’t much more than the flight would be.
I will take a look at the flights on Ryanair. How much do you think a bus for 3 people would be from Barcelona to Girona? We would have to do it twice. Thanks!

Here’s the schedule and fares for the Girona-Barcelona bus. The fare is 21 euros per person for a round trip (down in the bottom right corner in the gray box):

Great! Thanks for your help!

You’re welcome. I think you guys are making a good call taking the Eurostar instead of flying.
Be very aware of Ryanair fees and policies—35 EUR per checked bag, must check in online 15 days up to 4 hours in advance, or pay 35? EUR to check in at airport, etc. If you’re traveling light and know you will have ability to print off boarding passes in advance, then Ryanair can be very cheap with advance purchase. But also consider other airlines on the route. Easyjet, for example, have slightly higher fares, but when you consider their fees vs. Ryanair, then Easyjet usually come out on top. Ryanair are also more likely to fly to far-out airports. Girona is 1.5 hours by car from Barcelona, for example (having recently driven it a couple of times). Sometimes this isn’t so bad—if you’re wanting to get out of the city, anyway, but just note which airports are being used when you book a low-cost airline.
I think it’s actually 15 euros per bag on Ryanair, unless it varies by route. I did notice that they have a 15kg max, and even if you pay for 2 bags you get 30kg but each bag still has a 15kg max. Easyjet allows up to 32kg per bag but it gets pricey once you go over 20kg.
Yeah I was worried about all the fees associated with Ryanair, so I have been paying attention to that. Those fees, along with the money for bus trips definitely add up.

yeah, ti definitely adds up, and I always weigh the savings against convenience and comfort when figuring out how to travel. Sometimes the cheapest way just isn’t worth it.
Agreed. Cheapest does not always mean best. There is, what I call, the Price/Hassle quotient.
Yep, 15 EUR first bag with Ryanair currently, and 35 EUR for a second bag. Over 15kg in a bag = 20 EUR per each kilogram over 15.
Mandatory online checkin 5 EUR, and credit card fee 5 EUR. Sometimes they run offers with no fees, however. But for a normal booking, 1 (relatively light) bag, remember to add 25 EUR to the ticket cost—each way.
