Hi! Going to Europe for 3 months a year from now. Trying to come up with a budget. Need help on figuring out what transportation options are the most economical. Here is the rundown of the places that I and my husband will be visiting.

Spain and Portugal= (4 weeks) Have heard from some that driving in this area is a good option. What would be cheaper renting a car or point to point tickets? Or is a railpass a better idea?
Southern France= (1 week) On our way to Italy we would like to visit this area. What is better, point to point or railpass?
Italy= (4 weeks) What would be cheaper a railpass or point to point tickets?
Switzerland= (1 week) I have heard train travel here is really expensive. Is a railpass the cheaper option or point to point?
Area around French Alps= (1 week) Railpass or point to point?
Paris and Normandy area= (1 week) Railpass or point to point?
Belgium and Netherlands= (1 week) Railpass or point to point?

By the way I will be 25 during this trip. My husband on the other hand will be 26 but will turn 27 while on the trip. Would this make him not eligible for the 26 and under discount on railpasses? Or if he buys a pass while still 26 would this make him eligible for the discount?
I have done some brainstorming and this was my idea for what might be the cheapest route to take. But you tell me what you think…
Spain and Portugal renting a car. Using point to point tickets for Southern France and Italy. Then using a 1 month railpass for Switzerland, French Alps, Paris, Normandy, Belgium and Netherlands. Please give me any suggestions you might have. I am really confused on what is the smartest, cheapest way! Looking forward to all your suggestions!
