Ciirus Cards
Thu, 10/07/2004 - 21:52
Hi Everyone ,
I will be a first time traveller through europe next year for 3 months, Starting in London going as far east as Hungry and far west as Spain. Is any one able to let me know if i would have a problem with only using my Ciirus ATM card, at present i dont have a credit card.
This would help alot
Thanks
Shan

I don’t think you should have any problems. My interac card is Cirrus, and I’ve never had trouble using it in Europe (Eastern & Western).
Always bring another kind of access to funds "just in case".
Your card should work everywhere, but you should have more than one source of funds, in case it doesn’t. A couple of backup travellers’ cheques, a credit card (if you’re not leaving till next year you can apply now), and/or some emergency local cash should be ok as a backup in case your card gets stolen, eaten by a machine, lost, or simply doesn’t work somewhere.
One piece of advice: if your card, for some reason, gets rejected by a bank machine, NEVER try reinserting it in the same machine right away. Walk a few blocks, find another bank, try a different machine. Reinserting the card in the same machine might be enough to get it eaten.
Oh, and make sure you have a 4-digit numeric PIN.
Make sure when U travel 2 bring 2 ATM cards…1 mastercard and 1 visa…depending on the country..sometimes they take one or the other.
I would HIGHLY suggest getting a credit card..HIGHLY..even a one with high interest because U never know what can happen..u need back up money..
WEAR A MONEY BELT AT ALL TIMES!!! Keep everything valuable in there..cash/credit cards…passport!
I travelled all throughout Europe, western and eastern and didn’t have any problems using my cirrus card. It was only when I got back to London, did I find a couple different atm’s that wouldn’t accept my card. I also brought a credit card, so I was okay and ultimately was able to find a bank amchine that would give me money but not all of them would. Even if you don’t end up using the credit card at all, I would def. suggest bringing one. You should always have an alternative method for accessing money and keep the cards in seperate places.
Another heads up, bank machines in Europe don’t show your balance, so you should sign up for online banking so when you go to the net cafe’s you can check your balance there.
