The Colosseum triumphs over all other ruins in the eternal city as the most intact examples of ancient pride, ingenuity, and violence. Built at a time when Rome had an insatiable appetite for blood, the Colosseum was an outlet for tens of thousands of spectators as they watched gladiators fend off lions and other wild beasts before their limbs were mercilessly torn apart in an unending orgy of blood and gore. Fortunately, the violence has ceased and now you only need to contend with massive crowds of tourists that swarm the site each day.
