concentration camps
Thu, 04/05/2007 - 11:05
Does anyone know of any interesting daytrips that can be taken from Munich, or Berlin, especially involving concentration camps? My three friends and I will be there in mid August and would be really interested in visiting a concentration camp during our month long stay. Other than Auschwitz, what other camps have you visited? Which ones were the most (or least) impressive, or “must sees”?
Thanks

The obvious choice is to go to Dachau, as a trip from Munich. It takes about 30 mins. You have to take the suburban train to Dachau, and once your there take a local bus to the camp site.
I was there in August ’05. It was a great trip, and a very interesting day.

I visited Dachau, it’s a chilling, sobering visit and certainly worth the 1/2 day. Dachau, and the other camps within the borders of Germany, were labor and concentration camps, not death camps. The crematorium at Dachau was kept busy burning the bodies of those who died of malnutrition, disease, execution, medical experiments or being worked to death. The single gas chamber there that was never used. The death camps, like Auschwitz were in the systematic business of efficiently killing people.
Thanks, this is great information. I will really try to make the trip while I’m there.
I really enjoyed Terezin in Czech republic. Its north of Prague, close to the German border. The place is kinda secluded, you just walk around by yourself and go in whatever building and doors you want. I liked it better than Auschwitz because its just bare and left as it was. There are no museum-like displays and such.

Concentration camp near Berlin. I’m sure other tour company would offer the same thing.
