i am going to nyc the beginning of aug and wanted to go to coney island but heard that it was hard to get to because you go through a really bad area on the subway and it is really expensive to get a cab. has anyone been there and no if this is true and if so a better way to get there. thanks.

I was there a few months ago, not really worth the time it takes to get out there in my opinion, unless you really like carnival games or sitting on the beach. You do have to go through some pretty tough areas though, but I didn’t have any problems. Anyway you should pick up the 6th ave exp. line (at Broadway/Lafayette, Rockefeller Ctr etc, just make sure it’s the express D train because it’s way quicker than the local) I don’t remember having to make any transfers. It takes maybe 30-45 mins. from Manhattan. You can pick up some really great free maps and buy metro passes at the transit museum in Grand Central Station that will show you exactly how to get out to Coney Island. Don’t bother with a cab as they are really expensive, the train is the best way and I’m pretty sure that the fare is convered with a metro pass. Good Luck!

It’s very odd to read this question on these boards. That’s because I live about 10 minutes away from Coney Island and in earlier years I actually lived across the street from Cyclone. It’s about 1 hr 15 min or so away by train from mid-town Manhattan. B,D,F lines all go there. B is usually the fastest, but not by much.

You don’t really go through any bad areas on the subway, so no worries about that. Yes, cab would be expensive ($40?). If your time in New York is limited, I’d say don’t bother. However, if you really want to ride the Cyclone or get a hot dog at the original Nathan’s then go ahead. By the way, while at at, you may want to visit New York Aquarium which is right next to the Cyclone — it’s just something extra to do while in the area. And since you are there in August, hit the beach — it’s not the cleanest in the world, but if you walk a bit to the left of Coney Island, you’ll find less people and somewhat cleaner environs.
