Costly decision...
Wed, 02/02/2005 - 05:25
I’ve been aupairing in Holland for the past 8 months, and I decided to extend my ticket and backpack for a couple months before heading back to the states.
My dilemna now is that I have two suitcases, a duffle bag, and a small backpack that needs to get home somehow. Granted, I’ll be taking some of it when I go backpacking, but barely enough to make a dent.
I called my airline and they said that since 9-11 they no longer can fly unaccompanied baggage for people who have not done it before the tragedy. Other than simply mailing it (meaning I would probably have to sell a kidney), are there any other options?
Thank a bunch!
Sara

Hey Sara,
I was in the same situation but on the other side of the atlantic. Im irish and lived for 12 months in the states working, i decided to travel at the end of it too. I left colorado and headed south toward mexico, i did a big ol’ loop and flew home again from denver, where i began. You could do the same, as Holland is not in a bad position for doing a loop tucked up there in the corner of Europe. Hope it helps.
Al.
Have you looked into shipping it home via sea-mail? It’s a lot cheaper than normal shipping route’s that utilise air. It just takes longer to get there, so you might make it home before it does, but it’ll eventually get there. Just a thought.
In the Netherlands, I’ve used both DHL, http://www.dhl.nl/ and UPS, http://www.ups.com/c… for documents and packages, although never larger than five kg. I can’t imagine what the lowest postal rate would be, but worth a look: http://www.tpgpost.n… There are international companies that specialize in transporting smaller items, possibly googling would be useful, otherwise a local shipping agent or international mover should be able to provide a quote.
Thanks for the help! I’ll be looking into all these options for sure!
