croatia?
Thu, 06/07/2007 - 12:48
I would REALLY love to see croatia sometime around the 19th of june through the 23rd or something….can anyone tell me the good places to go, the good airport to fly into, what to do there, etc? I’ve been told it’s a beautiful country and most of my ancestors come from there, but that’s the limit of my knowledge on the place. Thanks for any help!

Croatia is an amazing place – you’re right.
In the time you have, I’d focus on a small area.
Two ideas:
Istrian Peninsula (Rovinj as your base, explore Porec, Pula – etc)
Dubrovnik & Environs (Perhaps explore nearby islands as well)
Do some googling on those and let us know what peaks your interest.
hmmm…I really like the history that lies in dubrovnik, but the history in pula and porec is fascinating too…can you tell me which one has more to offer in the history realm?
I’m a total nerd, I love to go to museums, see old buildings, old churches, ancient forests, etc.
If you’re a total nerd, then doing a bit of research on these cities shouldn’t be too hard.
What kind of question is ‘which city has more to offer in the history realm’?
I apologize if I’ve offended you in some way…you seem irritated. I am currently sitting at a slow computer, trying my hardest to pull up google pages and whatnot that seem to take forever. So, my nerdy self is finding it difficult to research Croatia, seeing as I am on a time constraint. My question that you so lovingly picked at basically is asking: Where should I go to in Croatia if I am interested in history and love to see old churches, buildings, forests, museums, etc? Thank you for any help.
dubrovnik.
In addition to Dubrovnik, Korcula if you have the time, Hvar and Split if you have more. The pic is of the town square in Hvar, with St. Stephen’s in the foreground.
Dubrovnik would probably be the easiest to fly into, but Split might work well too, especially if you are interested in the Istrian Peninsula.

Cil had some good suggestions. Dubrovnik is prob. the best place for a short visit to Croatia. The ancient city walls, the amazingly preserved old town, etc – seems like it would really fit the bill for what you are looking for.
It does have Diocletians Palace (sp) which would meet your historical requirement
Korcula and Hvar are other great suggestions.
To me Split is kinda boring. Some love it though, I just have never got into it
If you want to fly into the Istrian Peninsula, don’t go to Split though, fly to Trieste in Italy, or a LCC flight to Pula (i think that’s the LCC airport around there). Split would be somewhat of a haul to get there.
Have a great trip!
I can’t wait to go to Croatia, myself. I was gonna go this year, but I’m not able to now… next year it is!
Bath, Haltwhistle, London, Füssen, Freiburg, Stuttgart, Speyer, Nördlingen, Salzburg, Hallstatt, Salzburg, Rome, Ostia Antica, Athens, Delphi, Athens
Wow, thanks for the suggestions guys! I was actually not thinking dubrovnik would be the best choice, but that’s why I came to this forum….becuase most people here know more about it than I do.
I’m so excited, yay!
Sounds good – so what did you decide on? Flying to Dubrovnik and touring around that area?

BTW – don’t be put off by heavydrinker – he’s harmless [
Actually, my friend wants to go to Sicily…to see the town that her ancestors came from.
I wnat to see the town my ancestors came from in croatia, but sicily seems to be a better idea all around. More convenient for all of my friends and I to go do randomly in the summer.
