Hi Everyone I’m new here!

A friend and I want to backpack Europe next year for six weeks (haven’t a specific date yet) and at the moment we are trying to gather as much info as possible on different places and things to see.

Something both of us would like to do very much is cycle through&nbsprovence for a few, say 4, days.  I’ve been to websites that advertise bicycling tours but all the tours I’ve seen are very expensive and way beyond our budget.  Is it possible to rent bikes somewhere and cycle Provence on our own?  Would it be hard getting around on a bike with backpacks?  Would we get cheap accomodation in that area so that we can get by on our budget?  Is there anyone here who’s done this before who could give me some advice?

We’re just looking for some experieces beyond the big city big sites thing and this looks like something worth considering.
Thanks!

i think you would suffer on a bike with a backpack
it would be comfortable for 2 hours if you had a rack on the back of the bike to strap your pack on to but the bikes you’re going to rent aren’t going to likely have racks

i rented a bike to cycle to 2 chateaux from Blois
it was a fun 70 km but tiring

I am leaving from Palo Alto with $123 for 22 days
London, Paris, Tours, Caen, La Rochelle, Annecy, Genoa, Venice, Florence, Rome

We were in the more mountainous parts of Provence and in Alpes Maritime.  The very agressive French drivers on the twisty, narrow roads and fairly heavy traffic on the twisty, narrow roads would be terrifying for a cyclist.  It was scary enough in a car.  We saw the clean-up of at least 1 serious accident every day we were there.

I agree wth renagel and oldlady that you may want to rethink this.  However, I don’t see why you shouldn’t rent a bicycle for a day and choose a spot to cycle around, like a particular town, or through the backroads (preferably non-automobile paths) of a wine region.  Take a look at the link Cil is providing, and go with this option.

But 4 days nonstop with your backpacks (let alone sharing the roads with cars) is overkill.  Sounds romantic, though.

Thanx for the advice!  Sounds like we definitely won’t be attempting this! It could be a disaster.[Wink] I like your idea luv the beach, I think one or day day trips with bikes would be lots of fun and much more practical and do-able!
