Dangerous Places all around the world?
Thu, 11/09/2006 - 12:04
Or at least, places that you must be a little extra careful?
I am a curious cat, that’s why i ask.
Gaza City?
The west part of my town.
Eat the food, use the wrong verbs, and end up getting charged double.
HEY! If you were a hotdog, would you eat yourself? I know I would—heck I’d have seconds, and wash it down with an ice-cold Budweiser.
Seriously…
Every town has dodgy parts. Just ask at hostel reception if you’re planning to be out late—they will advise areas you might want to avoid.
Vienna doesn´t. Is this a good or a bad sign?
Apparently danger is just a lack for adventure. ex: I recently met a guy in my hostel in Romania that is driving to Sri Lanka for some kind of random job he was offered. He said he was a little concerned about the drive through Iran. I could only imagine.
During the riots in Budapest people were emailing me saying to be careful, but I was right in the middle of the tear gas/debris cross-fire and loved every second of it! But I must admit, if I had seen the guy driving the tank I probably would have been pretty damn scared, still taking pictures, but damn scared.
I once rented an apartment in the shady part of Sevilla. Checked it out in the day and everything seemed fine, so I paid the guy for the month and settled in. Came back from the bar the first night to find two prostitutes shooting up on the doorstep. They were really polite and apologetic. Then there was the time I intervened when one of them turned down a would-be customer and he grabbed her by the throat. And me and a neighbor stopping a guy from beating his wife in the street. Nice neighborhood.
My sis is going to Tel Aviv soon. I guess.. there are zones and zones.
This was Karlsplatz. You´re right, there was a pretty nasty drug scene there. It looked scary, but there were never major incidents. There is a lot more police around Karlsplatz now and cameras everywhere. Which only made that scene move to another square…
Unfortunately, Austria has a very law-and-order-like drug policy which doesn´t solve the problem, the Swiss do it much better.
The Nigerians have taken over all the drug-dealing business in Vienna recently. The good thing about them is that they seriously regard themselves as "
rofessional businessmen" – they aren´t high on their own stuff and unarmed, and since they´re all illegal they try to keep the ball low so the police doesn´t notice them. So: at least the dealers themselves are no "security problem".
Jackson, Mississippi
I think per capita, we have one of the highest murder rates in the country. A friend, who studied at Oxford, told me that I would love Europe because it’s safer than where I live. No way in the world do you want to walk around downtown here at 1:00 in the morning.

I would travel to Naples at the moment. The Cosa Nostra (mafia) is fighting and killing people there. Some members don´t want to share the power in the "drug-dealers-market".
The Italian government is sending soldiers and police task force to the city.
I´m really sorry about that, because there´s much to see in that city!
The city I live in, St. Louis, Missouri was just rated the most violent/dangerous in the United States. At least we’re number one at something…
New Orleans and Detroit were having off years
New Orleans got ahead of the game when they were shooting people who were trying to rescue them. Not to mention the looting of unneeded things. Can’t see much use for a microwave with no electricity.
Eat the food, use the wrong verbs, and end up getting charged double.
baltimore, md
highest murder rate in the states. just watch the wire
Iraq
beach-lunch-siesta-beach-shower-dinner-nightlife-repeat
I saw someone strangled in Vienna (not to death, he fought off the attacker), and the attacker wasn’t a Nigerian. So, while this didn’t happen in a dodgy area (metro escalator at mid-afternoon), I’d say it qualifies as dodgy behavior.
SE Washington DC
East St. Louis
West Phoenix
Johannesburg, SA
Rio de Janeiro
Scotland (most violent developed country according to U.N.)
Dili, East Timor
Darfur
Its great that Phoenix was on the list. was feeling alittle left out.
Rome, Bari, Corfu, Athens, Íos, Thíra, Rhodes, Bodrum, Fethiye, Antalya, Istanbul
Buffy? Is it you?
