Day trip to Stonehenge
Wed, 06/22/2005 - 11:18
Does anyone know of any day trips from London. I want to know how long the trips are, and if there is a place to book them online. We just want to leave London in the morning and return late afternoon, or early evening. Thanks for any info.
There are hundreds of tours to stonehenge available. Tourist information or your hostel will have dozens of brochures. I don’t think you’d have any trouble arranging for one at the last minute.
It’s also easy to do without taking an organzied tour. Trains run from Waterloo station to Salisbury every hour. Buses to Stonehenge leave from the train station and are timed to mesh with the trains to/from London. Some buses include admission fee to Stonehenge in the price (a "tour"
.
Use the search function to find several old posts about day trips to Stonehenge and combined day trips to Stonehenge and Amesbury (another stone circle) or Stonehenge and Bath. I’ve done Stonehenge and Bath as a day trip by train and highly recommend it.
I found a nice looking trip via Londontown.com:
Its 56 Euro per person for the trip what is included is below
The itinerary is: Tour departs Victoria Coach Station at 08:45 and returns to London at approximately 18:45.
Hope this helps
(I am looking into it as well for myself)

Stonehenge,The New Forest & Portsmouth
Evan Evans Tours
This exciting full day tour starts with a visit to Stonehenge, the ancient world heritage site located on Salisbury plain. We see the ancient monoliths that were mysteriously transported there more than 4000 years ago. Departing Stonehenge,we drive through the beautiful New Forest,England’s oldest forest and soon to become a National Park.Enjoy some stunning scenery and landscapes, before we reach Portsmouth. The afternoon is spent visiting the historic dockyard, one of the top ten heritage attractions in the UK,and celebrating in 2005 the bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar. Here we tour on board Admiral Lord Nelson’s HMS Victory, the world’s oldest commissioned warship and walk the quarterdeck where Nelson fell, mortally wounded, and the area on the orlop deck where he died three hours later knowing victory and a certain place in history was his. There is an opportunity to visit either the Mary Rose, lost in 1545,excavated and brought to the surface in 1982,and the only 16th century warship on display in the world,or visit HMS Warrior, looking today as she did at the time of her first commission,1861-1864. Should you wish to take a Harbour tour,a 50 minute boat tour, this is also available weather permitting.

Thanks for the replies. I tried the search first, but the page wasn’t loading right, and the Search Button was not available.
I was thinking of the train to Sailsbury idea, and then bus to stonehenge. I’m not interested in having tour guides. I just have a day and a half to kill in England, an I don’t want to spend the entire time in London. I’ve seen all the sights before.
I really like that idea best. I didn’t know that the trains and buses schedules ran together like that.
Does anyone know where I can look at the prices of that train ride? and possibly the bus connection?
Thanks for the info Pippylee, but 56 pounds is way too much for me. I think that i’ll just go out and see it for myself, and then be back in London before evening and head off to the airport.
Thanks again.
http://www.stoneheng… has train times and prices.
http://www.english-h…
lists admission fees.
You can probably beat 56 euros, but not by much. That’s about 37 GB pounds.
Wow, thanks Oldlady.
Unless things have changed, don’t expect to be able to touch the stones, me being the cheapskate, I didn’t bother with the entrance fee and just looked and took photos from outside the fence
Also another alternative is Averbury, those stones you can touch
The day I visited Stonehenge was the most boring day of my life. I saw Bath and Stonehenge and I was bored stiff the whole day. And I’m a history buff, I’m not an ignoramus. It looks exactly the same in pictures and I found it real expensive for what it was….probably because I’m on the Aussie dollar. Save your money for other attractions.
Thanks for that extra info. I was thinking about the entrance fee and was wondering that exact thing. 5 Pounds is alot to get beyond the fence, so I might just end up doing that.
Miss Bridget or anyone if you have a suggestion,
I only have one day to give to somewhere outside of London. I’m looking for something that is a neat place to go or a town that is something nice to see. It really doesn’t matter much to me, but since you think stonehenge may not be worth it, do you have any other ideas of something to do. I’ve already been to Windsor and the castle, so something other than that.
Thanks again for any suggestions.
I forgot to add something to the last post.
Oldlady,
You said that you did stonehenge and bath as a day trip. Did you do both of these on the same day and was the day trip from London? Any idea how far Bath is by train from Salisbury?
How about Leeds Castle, that’s worth a day tri out of London, Greenline Bus Coaches run a service out that way, check out their web site www.greenline.co.uk
Thanks for the info Jennifer&Chester.
Stonehenge can be a bit underwhelming – its a very short walk round some stones. If you really want to see it, go via Salisbury – the cathedral is beautiful.
Personally, I’d do Bath or Oxford for history – Brighton for a good time.
Bath and Stonehenge are doable as a day trip from London. We went by train from Waterloo to Salisbury, took bus and spent about an hour and a half at Stonehenge and bus back to Salisbury, then train to Bath. We spent afternoon at the Roman baths until they closed then spent a little time wandering the Victorian city. Train back to London arrives at a different station — Paddington, I think. Brittish train schedules….

Thanks Oldlady,
That actually sounds like a more interesting trip. I’ve heard from a few friends that Bath was a really nice place to go. Maybe i’ll end up doing something like that, as long as I can get back to London and get out to Gatwich to catch my plane.
As oldlady said, you can see Salisbury, Stonehenge, and Bath in one day, as a day trip from London. I did this, but it makes for a very long day. Salisbury and Stonehenge each deserve at least an hour, and I’ve give Bath at least three hours.
FYI, the train from London to Salisbury is 90 minutes, the train from Salisbury to Bath is one hour, and the train from Bath to London is 90 minutes.
Thanks for the extra info Homeskillet,
I think I like the idea of doing all of the places rather than just going to Stonehenge. I really need to get out into the English country side. I’ve only been to London and Windsor, and anyone that I talk to from England always tells me, that there is so much more out there to see than just London. Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions and also train info.
Nivid,
I double checked the price is $105 canadian (seeing as I am canadian too) not too bad…I found the price through Flight center for the same type of trip. The Uk is insanley expensive compared to our stupid worthless dollar but what you going to do.
check out: http://www.flightcen…
It seems ok. I am trying to organize this type of trip as well I will be in the UK in the middle of August.
Good Luck to you
Pippylee
Thanks Pippylee,
I’m considering so many options now, but i’m going to make it to Stonehenge somehow. Even if it isn’t that exciting, I want to see it anyway.
I will be in the UK both the end of July/beginning of August in Scotland and late August in England. I only have the one day to do something in the English countryside. I am flying into London on the 24th at night and flying out on the 26th in the morning, so it’s going to be a quick visit this time around.
Ditto.
