Do I need a heavy jacket??
Thu, 04/26/2007 - 13:26
Ok, so we’re going to be in Europe in july and august…… and my friend swears I’ll need a heavy jacket. I don’t think I do… granted we will be sleeping outside and camping a lot. But still…. it’s summer. I am planning on layering clothes and bringing a sweatshirt, do I need a jacket? (specifically spain, italy, germany, switzerland, and czech repub.)

absolutely not. I’m not a summer traveler, but there should be no reason for anything heavy. And you would be suprised how much heavier that jacket will make your backpack feel. I actually spent a couple weeks traveling europe in the dead of winter without a heavy jacket, but it wasn’t on pourpose [

You do not need a heavy jacket. However, you have the distinct possibility of running into rain and very cool evenings — 45 degrees F and rain is COLD if you’re not prepared for it. Take something with long sleeves (sweatshirt is pretty bulky to pack) in addition to a lightweight, water repellent jacket. If you hit a serious cold spell you can layer t-shirt, long sleeves and your jacket.
If you’re camping and bringing a sleeping bag, you definitely don’t. Otherwise, a sweatshirt & hat will be fine.
If you are camping, there may be some cold nights – so prepare for that in some way, a light sleeping bag is the best bet. I suggest not taking a heavy jacket – if you find you need something warmer once you are there, you can always buy something. I am ALWAYS cold – my tip is bring silk long underwear. It is surprisingly warm and very compact.
Thanks everyone! That’s pretty much what I figured… just wanted some opinions. I will definitely not be bringing a heavy jacket!
Going to Iceland, Greenland, Channel Isles, Northern Scotland, Faroe Islands, then take a coat. North of Hamburg, take a thick sweater or fleece just in case. Sometimes summer does not come to Denmark and it is 60-65 degrees and rain 9/10 days. It’s been warm so far. Love climate change.
