I usually have the radio tuned to a talk show on my 35 mile drive to and from work, but recently, I’ve had fewer choices. Dr. Laura has managed to replace several hosts at nearby stations, and at certain hours, there is only one voice on the air whatever the station – hers.
For those who don’t know her, she’s a nationally (US) syndicated talk show host whose show consists of direct dispensation of advice over the phone to listeners who call in with their problems. She’s Jewish, and seems to use her Judeo-Christian cultural roots as the basis for her judgments about callers and the advice she gives. It’s probably impossible for me to help you fathom her if you haven’t heard her.
Anyway, I find her narrow, predictable, and boring (although I thought she was quite entertaining at first) and I want to know why she is usurping all the airtime. Who is listening to her? Why is she so damned popular? Can any of you guys explain this or why you enjoy her? If this trend continues, I’m going to have to buy an FM radio.
