I was wondering how it is to drink in public and in places outside of pubs in the majority of europe? For money saving reasons is drinking a bottle of wine in parks, a liter in the hostels, etc., having a drink or two outside of pubs frowned upon or illegal in most countries? looking to backpack most major cities in and around germany? Obviously it can’t be much different from the states, or is it…?

Forgot to mention flasking is obvious, and i’m not trying be an alcoholic, just save some money on the nightly drink or two. I think its great to enjoy the local pub/nightlife and plan on it but looking into other obtions to save money at the same time. suggestions?

baldona, i’m a student in london and i’ve travelled to portugal, around france, the netherlands, czech republic, belgium, sweden, etc. being a student, even when we’re going out to nice clubs we drink beforehand. no, it isn’t frowned upon to have drinks in your hotel room. i doubt there are many middle class people who don’t drink in london before going out given the extortionate cost of alcohol. hit up a grocer and pick up something before you go out. it depends on the country whether it’s tolerated in public. in the uk, you can &quotregame" on the tube or the street en route to the pub/bar/club (although this isn’t very classy I must admit I sometimes indulge). in France, it’s perfectly normal to enjoy a bottle of wine with friends in a park, whereas in sweden i would advise against this. ask the locals (or check yourself) what they drink and what’s cheapest at the grocer. stay away from cocktails when you go out. if you’re really budgeting, try to stay away from bars/clubs with cover charges (or go early—in the UK this means before 10, on the continent often before 11) as these can be very expensive and needless. if you follow these basic guidelines, you should be able to have a good time without spending too much. good luck and have fun!
