Hi
I dont know if anyone can help me, but hey who knows. So I have duel citizenship. Swiss and South African. According to the British Embassey here, I dont need any visas or work permits with a Swiss passport/ citizenshipTo work and stay in ENgland. And most countries in Europe are the same I believe. I’m a little nervous, since this seems to easy. My friend travelling with me to London has a requirement list that is pretty scarey. Does anyone know wether it is as simple as this.? Or am I going to land in London and be sent home the same night?
Any info would be really appreciated.
Thanks
Gabi

If you’re travelling on a Swiss passport then, for all intents and purposes, you’re Swiss and should be treated as such when you arrive. Be aware though that Switzerland isn’t part of the EU and that might throw in some complications about working… although you seem to have looked into this and will probably know more about it that me. I have a UK passport and am able to work anywhere in the EU, but it’s not as easy as just rocking up and getting a job… I think some countries might have extra requirements. Not sure though what is required of Swiss people who want to work in the UK… might be easy! But you won’t be turned away… I don’t think anyone travelling on a Swiss passport to the UK would be turned away.

Hello fellow Duel citizenship holder. I too am a swiss citizen and a American citizen. I am in the UK at the moment under my American passport. I want to work in the UK and have contacted the home office. According to the home office, or the lady i talked to on the phone, as a swiss citizen i have all the rights of an EU national to work and live in the UK. This is becuase the Uk has an agreement with some of the EEA countries which gives members of those states the right to work in the UK. Hope this helps and best of luck to you.

Never…is right. However, each country in the EU makes its own laws regulating the procedures that citisens from member states must follow regarding employment and residence. You will probably run into people in the UK who can fill you in on this.

US citizen with mother born in UK. She never applied for dual citizenship. Can I a child of someone born in uk apply for dual citizenship even though they don’t hold dual status???

The first thing you need to ask is whether or not your mother is a british citizen. Unlike popular beliefs, not all countries automatically give citizenship to anyone born in their country. The UK is an example. If at least one of your mother’s parents were British citizens when your mother was born, then she is definitely a british citizen too. If not, then she is most likely not. Assuming you were born in the US and that your dad is not a British citizen, then you are definitely not a British citizen in the eyes of the UK government. I hope that helps.
