I have not heard of this.  The process for a “duplicate” passport (because yours got lost, stolen, or destroyed) used to be almost exactly the same as the process for getting a renewal — same forms and everything  and it took same amount of time.

MMM… If you mean that you can have two “valid” passports at the same time, then it’s most certainly illegal, and if caught you’ll be in a big trouble.

You can’t have 2 valid passports from the same country at the same time.  It’s impossible.  But, if you have dual citizenship, then you can have a passport from 2 different countries.

The US does not officially recognize dual citizenship.  You technically have to renounce citizenship in any other country to be a US citizen.  

This is a common misconception. Many people have dual citizenship by birth. For example, any person born to Canadian parents while on US territory, or anyone born to parents of different citizenship. The US recognizes that kind of dual citizenship. Still a person with this kind of dual citizenship would have to renounce non-US citizenship, should (s)he decide to work for CIA, or some other agency where (s)he would have access to sensitive data.
If a person becomes a naturalized citizen, then the US would never recognize such person as dual citizen. That means, for example, that one would not have benefits of tax treaties, and such. But the US does not, in fact, require one to renounce other citizenship.  That remains the persons choice.

This is all of topic however, because the post is clearly about duplicate us passports.

 
 
Well, absolutes are dangerous, my wife has her US diplomatic passport and then a regular US one that she must use while traveling for fun.  But for poor old us, I have met one person who sounded legit and then heard of another (who I couldn’t vouch for) who had 2 standard US passports.

The US does not want its passport holders swearing loyalty oaths to other countries, or being generals in their armies, or prime ministers in their governments.  But otherwise the US has a very laissez-faire attitude about US passport holders with other passports.  You can in fact be a member of a foreign legislative body and be a US citisen, and you can hold dual citisenship and be a member of the US Congress —- so long as you are not an important member. I know of at least one member of the US Congress who holds a foreign pass from an EU land.
 
Many EU countries do not recognise dual citisenship or restrict it a lot.  A few EU countries do not automatically grant citisenship to children of their own Nationals born overseas and many do not grant it to children of foreigners born in the EU country.
 
America is incredibly flexible by contrast.

A duplicate passport is only valid for 2 years, you have to submit a letter why you want it, but hay it’s not illegal.
 
 
 

Very interesting… Although I bet having a duplicate passport will make one look more suspicious… Anyway, because of my Russian passport I always look suspicious…

Yes you can get one but it really only is important if your traveling to israel and then traveling to countries in the region that will not let you in with an israel stamp in your passport.

This is one of those things you REALLY have to think about.

If you get the duplicate passport for a trip to the middle east, for example, you’d want to use the 2 year dupe ONLY for entry and exit from Israel, but you’d want to use the “Real” one for visits to places like Lebanon and Syria. Reason being that Israel won’t see it as suspicious, nor will they care, but if Syria or Lebanon questioned it and wanted to see your OTHER passport, you’d be fucked, as that would have the stamp of the defenders of zion.
