ease of tenting europe
Wed, 10/24/2007 - 17:32
Hello fellow travelers! Johnny Canuck here planning on crossing the pond next april for several months of adventure
My plan is to tent as much as I can. I ‘ve looked into a few web sites regarding tent sites but they dont have a great amount of detail etc.
Anyone out there have any beta on good tenting sites they’ve been to or know of?
Cheers,
Thomas

It seems to me that camping in Europe is very accepted and cool, whether at a regulated campground, or more offbeat spots. Quite economical, too.
Some of the camping websites look like bogus covers for car rentals, but this one looks pretty good, with reviews and discussion boards:
Europe Camping Guide
There’s tons of camping areas outside most of the main cities in Europe. where abouts are you going and in what month?
The OP said April.
Hasn’t said where.
Might be brisk, could possibly be wet, but I’ve camped in such weather in the US and was fine.
It can still be pretty cold in April, especially in north & east europe. Last easter I was in Poland and it was friggin’ cold, wouldn’t want to camp there at that time of year.
This is something I’ve always wanted to do but never had a chance to yet. Most europeans see it as no big deal to camp almost anywhere, whereas in the US you’d be run out of the park by cops or off some vacant plot of land by a farmer with a shotgun and pack of hounds. I dunno about the technical legality on most of the continent, but from what I’ve heard, as long as you are respectful you should be fine. Now, I know in Scandinavia they actually have laws granting every man’s right to the wilderness, so you can quite literally, without fear of retribution, camp wherever the hell you want, as long as you clean up after yourself and don’t light a fire within 50 feet of someone’s house. Not sure I’d want to camp in Northern Sweden in April myself, but I’m sure it’d be do-able if you wanted to. [

Thanks for the feedback!! My plan is to fly into Paris (late april) then go directly down to northern spain just east of pamplona to Riglos. Im curious to know what the temps could be in that part of Spain? Would it be super hot? Or comfortable?
I plan on camping stealthily anywhere i can, save for cities where I’ll hostel. I hope europeans don’t mind campers in the woods off the beaten trail in rural areas.
Cant wait. I have ample camping experience in cold climates so I’m not concerned about cold weather. My biggest concern are super hot temps causing uncomfortable climbing conditions. I’ll head to the Alps if it gets too hot. Chamonix is a local I intend on visiting among others of course.
More ideas anyone?
Thomas
Southern France & Spain should be suitable weather in April, expect the temp to be in the 20’s
I forget the name of it, but there is this hiking trail that goes through Switzerland and you can follow it pretty much uninterrupted all the way down into Slovenia. I’ve always wanted to spend a couple months doing that… basically like the European equivalent of hiking the Appalachian trail (all the small towns and back woods destinations) except like a miniscule fraction of the length!
