Egypt
Mon, 05/21/2007 - 17:30
Anyone been to Egypt recently? My sister, her boyfriend and I are planning to go for a couple of weeks in the middle of December. How is the weather, transportation, dangers? Any tips or stories!
Thanks,
Elana
Looking forward to Israel, Egypt, Jordan and India in the fall!!
Hi Mate,
Where abouts are you staying in Egypt??
I go to Egypt about 3 times a year to get some good SCUBA diving in. Its usually just me and my mate that go but last time we went we took our mums so they ended up dragging on the Cairo Tour (If you can afford this I recommend it, about £140 per person, not sure what it is in your currency sorry) Basically You get picked up at 4am and fly to Cairo with a guide, who takes you round the Pyramids, the sphinx, the papyrus museum and then finally to Egyptian Museum which is absolutely breath taking.
Also dependent on your budget I strongly suggest trying some shallow SCUBA diving around the reefs it is trully fantastic. The link below is the company I use when I got out there (I usually stay in Sharm) They organise boat trips for just relaxation in the red Sea or snorkelling, anything that takes your fancy at the time. Also in Sharm there is the old town of Sharm which is completely tradtional – no alcohol is served in any restaurant there – if you drink they dont mind you taking and they will even store it and top up your glasses when needed. In a lot of the places i.e the boats and some shops or restaurants in the Old town due to their religion they ask you take your shoes off.

Here are a few of the photos I took last time I went diving. In December by the way you should be lucky enough to see the hammerhead sharks which is awesome to say the least.

I hope this info is ok for you and if you require anything else then please let me know as there is much more I can tell you about this wonderful place.
I’m going for 2 weeks as part of a RTW trip – I’ll be in Egypt in late October and will report back with my trip for sure.
We’re planning on Cairo, Luxor, maybe then either Siwa or Abu Simbel/Aswan – haven’t decided yet.
Weather: 45 degrees with 99% humidity
Transportation: better off walking
Dangers: other than gun toting jihadists, suicide bombers, theives, crooked carpet salesmen and arab drivers, none that I can think of.
Thanks so much for the replies. When I get a spare moment, I would love to ask Slicer some more questions!

uhh…HELLO… Rabid camels!
I was there in 2000. It was wonderful to see things I’d read about all my life.
That being said, be ready for the “hassle factor.”
Don’t miss the free Sufi Danicing show if it’s still going on.
