England, Scotland, Ireland
Fri, 02/11/2005 - 00:23
hey everyone,
i was looking for a little help on getting around england, scotland and ireland the cheapest. As of right now I’m looking to spend my first 5 days in London since I figure the first day may be a wash if i get bad jet lag.
After that I wanted to head up to Scotland. I hear Edinburgh is really nice but didnt know if you guys recommended anywhere else.
EasyJet flies from Edinburgh to Belfast so I figured that might be the most economical way to do that. But if I venture west or north than should I look into taking a ferry over?
Finally, i’m looking to spend 3 days in Dublin but wanted to spend a few days in a really rural area where I could just grab a pint of guinness and meet a few locals. Somewhere beatiful and quaint, preferable on the coast. Basically the most cliche Irish setting…hehe Lets go talks about Killarney/Killarney National Park and the Ring of Kerry which is in the southwest.

Try ryanair.com for cheap flights. I’m flying to Glasgow, from Paris, then back to London for about 20 euro without taxes which would make it around thirty american dollars. Easyjet is good as well. You can also try BMI.
Dingle is great, but can be overrun with tourists in the summer. When are you going? Doolin is a great choice as well. If you really want to avoid tourists and hang with the locals, just about any small village along the coast in Galway, Kerry and western Cork will do.
I’ll be in ireland late april. Thanks for the ideas. I’ll look into dingle and doolin.
Yeah i wanted someplace random where there arent a bunch of tourists and I can just wander around and hangout in a pub with a few locals. I’m really into nice scenary so the coastlines and rolling hills would be really nice.
I went from London to Dublin a few weeks ago for .99 BGP on Ryanair, amazing deal, check them out.
i see a flight from edinburgh to dublin for 0.74GBP?? Isnt that like $2USD? How can it be that cheap?
I’ve just been to scotland..
i went to ‘Inverness’ which is even further north and did the lochness tour etc.
I thought it was quite nice and subtle.. Nothing special though…
Edinburgh would be the way to go…
Dublin too is supposed to be great.
Go to liverpool and check out the beatles museums!!!!!
Edinburgh is great, I did 3 days in Edinburgh, than a Haggis 3 day bus tour through scotland: inverness, lochness, isle of Skye, I really liked it. It allowed you to see a lot of the country side with a knowledgeable guide, and we partied at night…Dublin is cool too, I also liked Liverpool, and Bath is a cool city as well. You can take a 5 hour cruise from Dublin to Liverpool, I did and the boat was nice, and not too expensive
.74 GBP is right believe it or not. I paid .99 GBP. There are of course taxes and stuff they add on, but roundtrip for two I ended up paying slightly over $100 US.
Edinburgh is a must – we have a Castle in the High Street and a Mountain 852 feet in the middle of the city! So much to explore – allow at least 4 days. If you want the beach stay at Portobello in a bed and breakfast (about £22 per night including full breakfast) 3 miles from Edinburgh city centre and great bus route. Otherwise plenty of bed and breakfast in the city centre (or hostels for £12 per night USD18).
Strongly suggest you take the Haggis Backpackers tour and go up North to Skye especially if you are here in Spring, amazing time of the year and you will see a lot of our country quite cheaply. Log on to their web site.
Dublin is very expensive to live in, more so than Edinburgh. Ryanair is the best for the 99 pence flights from Edinburgh direct. (1 HOUR FLIGHT) To go south from Dublin would be around 5 hours travelling down to the Ring of Kerry etc. Plenty of hostels in Dublin – Hotel room is around £120 per night – no breakfast.
Cost of living in UK is roughly twice as much as the States.
avril5 – are you from Edinbrugh? I lived there for a while… I miss it so much! So nice to hear someone talk about it.
Unless you’re planning on spending time in the north why fly to Belfast? There are flights from Edinburugh to Dublin and from Glasgow to Dublin or Cork (if you’re going to Killarney). Killarney and Kerry are beautiful but touristy so if you want somewhere with less tourists try Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim. They are all on the west coast and similare in landscape to the popular areas like Galway and Kerry but they aren’t as touristy. They are also close to Galway which is a great city!
If you’re going to be in Edinburgh, I’d suggest taking to bus to Stranraer, connecting on the ferry to Belfast and catching the bus down to Dublin. It’s generally cheaper than a flight (unless you catch a seat sale). The ferry is the largest of its kind in the world and pretty cool. It’s cheap too. The entire trip will take you about 8-10 hours depending on connections, but you’ll be able to see the Scottish and Irish country side as you travel.
From Dublin you can catch busses to all other parts of the country. If you’re looking for true Irish culture check out Kilkenny. Only a short bus trip from Dublin.
I love Scotland! Edinburgh was my favorite. I also enjoyed St. Andrews, but more for a day trip. I was not really keen on Glasgow as much. I went up to Isle of Skye, but the weather was not great. Make sure you know your train/bus transportation in Scotland because my friend and I got stranded a few times!
