Hi,

Great setup here at eurotrip. I’ll be doing a documentation on Europe in the next couple of months – hence your answers will help me with the necessary legwork prior leaving.

What’s the better Hostel / B & B / Short & Long term apartment you would advise for Europe ? We’ll be a team of four, and the thing we’re looking at would most likely be ‘security’, ‘cleanliness’ and ‘available Broadband / *DSL ISP’ service. We’ll be doing a year tour for a project.

Your feedback appreciated,
Thank you.

Oh… the countries we’re looking at during the tenure of our project will be …

  1. France
  2. Italia
  3. Spain
  4. Portugal
  5. Austria
  6. Belgium
  7. Czech Republic
  8. Denmark
  9. Germany
  10. Hungary
  11. Bulgaria
  12. Switzerland
  13. Greece
  14. Croatia
  15. Romania
  16. Turkey {or at least the European side of it}

Preferably, with URLs to your suggesting.
Thank you,

Don

Your question is very broad. I might be able to advise places for 8 of the countries you listed, but what will you be documenting? Where exactly in each country? How long do you need to stay in each place? What is your budget? Will you need visas for work or stay longer than 90 days Schengen?

Don, Thank you.

I’ll be documenting the countries as a project for youth – Photography for a book I’m working on – we’ll be documenting people, the ‘lifestyle’, the savoir-faire etc. We may even cover some events in the next coming months. We will be communicating with Event promoters to come in as visiting Media.

We will not need Work Visas as we’re not working for any one company in Europe since we’ll be arriving from South East Asia. We envisage doing a month for each specific country, and our Embassy will handle all travel documents for us and that shouldn’t be an issue. Budget ? As frugal as can be – so a 1 or 2 star comfort is good enough – it is afterall for a book.

With the recent monetary crisis, it’d be daunting to undertake any projects, but we’re determine to rough it out to showcase Europe, to our world.

O … Where exactly in each specific country – major cities – and larger towns yet to be cities. One month is a long time to cover a country.

All the advice in the world about where to stay, what do see, who’s got free wireless, etc. isn’t going to do any good if you haphazardly show up to work and get turned away at Schengen border.

You say your embassy will handle all of that for you… so you will travel with diplomatic credentials? If so, then yes, you will probably have the right to stay in Schengenland longer than 90 days, and additionally have the right to work — if you have diplomatic credentials.

However, if you do not, you must pre-arrange your own long-stay visa since you will be inside the Schengen border for more than 90 days, and if you will be working, then in most cases you will be liable for tax to each country where the work is actually performed—regardless of “company” or self-employment. Keep in mind that many have tax rates near 50%.

I hope you get your diplomatic travel credentials, because that will make moot the length of stay, requirments for return travel, proof of sufficient funds, and taxation and residency laws.

Don, thank you for your insight – Rest assured as Media professionals we do not intend to work anywhere outside Asia Pacific where the grass is still greener, and warmer. We’re just researching, and documenting Europe for our book, and yes, our Government will do the necessary to ensure we have a hassle-free travel in and out of Europe.

Thank you again,

This is the second time in about a year there’s been someone doing a long photojournalism tour through Europe and saying they don’t need to worry about visas etc. because they’ll be taken care of. Interesting.

Try a “Mitwohnzentrale” for Germany and Austria. These are agencies helpping people to rent flats or rooms in shared flats if the actual tenant is away for a month or two. If there are 4 of you staying for several weeks in each city this will be much cheaper than a hotel or hostel room. And you´ll live in a real apartment.

Santa Klaus, Danke dir !! I was thinking of doing the same – we’ve identified homes in France, and in Denmark for the specific purpose of documenting not only cities, but the people where we’ll be interviewing on a casual tone – when permissible we’ll undertake that, otherwise we will be crashing at 3*** Hotels. Best to be frugal since costs in the EU can be quite daunting where hospitality is concerned.

Yes, you’ve nailed the problem on the head – thank you for your comment, and ‘insight’.

Augustin, Americans don’t normally have those problems – nor do some Asian Media. If its for a common good, and the project is being supported by the respective governments or NGOs, it should’nt be cause for concern. The only quandary now that I can conceive is the complex structure of the rail system ex: EuroRail’s system does not allow one to have a global passport beyond 2 months travel – if I read that correctly – And looking at a more practical approach – which ones to take or would it be better of us to fly since it is faster… Fortunately I do not have a GAP Year to waste cycling around the EU – not advisable in Winter tho’, since it would make for a tedious experience documenting the EU, with all the gadgeteries
