Eurail Pass Worth It?
Thu, 01/19/2012 - 22:41
Hey y’all! My 2 friends and I are going to London-France-Spain-back through France then down to Italy. Our planned trip is about a month and a half. We are all a little confused about the eurail because we just found out we pay for the pass, then there are extra fees for seat reservations and such? What are those fees like, and does it make the eurail pass worth it or should we just do city-city separately? Any info or advice helps! Thanks.

It sounds like a select pass would be your best bet. (Take a look at the descriptions and pricing on the rail passes tab above). If you plan out your exact itinerary, see if point to point will be cheaper by going to each country’s rail site and pricing tickets.
Remember, not all trains require seat reservations — in fact many don’t. Only the high speed fancy trains require it, or if you want a couchette for a night train. Lots of the time you’ll be able to get a seat without a reservation anyway.

The trip planner recommendation is the best general recommendation you’ll get without a whole lot of work and just plain luck.
You pay for reservations whether you use a rail pass or not. If you buy a point to point ticket for a train that requires a reservation it costs more than the ticket for a train on the same route that doesn’t require a reservation. Extra cost is the price of the reservation.
