Europe, 65 days
Wed, 02/09/2011 - 20:52
Hey guys & girls, I have a fairly complex question, in regards to a 2+ month (65 days, possibly more, depending on budgeting) trip to Europe. I’ve already done some research, browsed the forums, and have learned quite a few things; that being said, there are still a lot of questions left unanswered. First off, let me fill you in on some specifics.
Departing from Calgary, Alberta Canada on June 24th, 2011. Landing in our “kick off” city (Zurich, Switzerland) on June 25th, 2011. … Fill in the blanks … Scheduled return from Zurich, Switzerland on August 29th, 2011.I’m going on this trip with my best friend, and would like to experience and see as much of (I know this will probably be an issue) Europe as possible; we’re in our early 20’s, so we can take a little “travel beating”; that being said, we wouldn’t want to be on a train for more than we have to. We’d like to get a nice mix, of culture, life experience, and partying; We’ve already booked our flights, Eurail passes, got our gear and other necessary expenses, leaving us with a budget of $6000/person, or roughly $95/day for food/drinks/attractions/accomodations. We’re budget conscious, responsible individuals (for the most part haha) and we’re originally from Europe, so we’ve got the “best bang for your buck” pretty much engrained in our personalities; we are going to stay in hostels throughout the trip, and potentially couch surfing.
I know people usually list destination cities and ask for advice, but we figure we would do things a bit differently, and do things as they come along.
We’ve basically compounded a list of countries we are interested in, with no specific cities/destinations in mind; we are asking for your opinions as to what is worth seeing. Here is the list of countries we’re thinking of. Please note, the total number of days ideally would include travel time as well. Your suggestions/opinions are appreciated.
Zürich, Switzerland for 2 days
France for 10 days
Luxembourg for 3 days
Belgium for 5 days
Netherlands for 6 days
Germany for 10 days
Czech Republic for 6 days
Austria for 4 days
Budapest, Hungary for 4 days
Romania for 7 days FLYING TO ->
Italy for 8 days
Spain 5 days
Zürich, Switzerland for 2 days
= 63 days (+2 days to spare)

From personal experiance I would recommend to stay in Spain a bit longer. There is much to do there. I’ve been to Madrid once, and Barcelona twice, and Barcelona is by far one of the CLEANEST cities I’ve been too in Europe. Great party scene. you HAVE TO see Antonio Gaudi’s park in Barcelona.. and they have FANTASTIC food! not to mention a boat ride to Ibiza is a must.
As for France I’ve been there twice, both times to Paris. Its quite a tourist friendly place. Alot of shopping district, and museums. From what I heard from friends Marseille, France has some Amazing scenery.
Luxembourg is small, but nice.
I’ve been to Brussles, and seen the White cliffs of Dover, thats purty amazing.
Never been to the other places on your list.
But I do recommend Lisbon, Portugal.
and also I enjoyed Bath, in the U.K. …really Beautiful small town about 5 hours (i think i slept) bus ride from London.
Barcelona, Nice, Prague, Amsterdam, London
Imagination is more important than knowledge.
Luxembourg is basically just Luxembourg City surrounded by farmland. Honestly its just a big centre for business and government offices. There is no night life whasoever (god help you if you visit on a Sunday cuz everything will be closed). Google Luxembourg + Boring to see what I mean. I’d take those 3 days and add in someplaces in the south of France.
“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list”
I´d say more Spain, less Italy.
I love Spain and would want more time, but definitely would not cut from Italy. Rome, Venice, Florence, Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre are all must-see IMO. For 8 days I’d maybe do 3-4 in Rome, 2-3 Florence, 2 Venice/CT (or 3 in CT) OR do a Rome/Amalfi coast combo trip for 8 days.
Madrid, Barcelona, Athens, Santorini, Rome, Sorrento, Florence, Cinque Terre, Nice, Lyon, Paris, Zagreb, Grabovac (Plitvice), Split, Dubrovnik, London
