Europe May/June 2012 Trip
Fri, 06/10/2011 - 23:36
So, I want to give myself a month in Europe. The only problem is no one can go with me for a month straight so I have family/friends coming during different weeks (which explains the shorter days and longer days in some places). I need advice on places in each country to go, things to see, if I shouldn’t stay there that long or that short of time. So here it goes…
London- 2 days
Munich, Germany- 3 days
Ireland- 4 days
Italy- 6 days (Tuscany, Rome, Florence)???
Greece- 6 days (Athens/Ocean side?) Definitely staying here 6 days
Prague- 2 days
France- 5 days
London- 2 days
Please let me know any changes you suggest I make and places I need to see in each country!!!

Well, that’s a month all right. But it’s also 7 different countries.
I would advise trimming off something, I’m not sure what. Maybe Greece?
You could add Berlin and go to Prague from there.
How are you planning on getting around? Plane, train, combo?
Well, my mom is going for that portion of the trip and really wanted to stay on the Mediterranean and we were deciding between doing that in France or Greece, and we decided Greece because it’s supposed to be cheaper and prettier. Would you suggest France instead?
Also, it will probably be a plane/train combo depending on when and where/prices. What other country would you suggest cutting out? I’ve alway wanted to go to Ireland but I’m wondering if maybe I should cut it out of this trip and wait until my next trip?
Thanks for the advice!
The big reason fro saving Greece for your next trip is that it’s out of your way and you will spend a lot of time getting to/from Greece. Your six days in Greece could end up being a 1 and 1/2 days in Athens and another day and 1/2 on a single island with the rest of the time spent in transit or in airport and ferry departure lounges.
I doubt you will find Greece cheaper when you factor in the cost to get to/from Greece. As for prettier, the scenery is different, but not necessarily prettier. I guess the best view in Greece is more breath-taking than the best view on the French coast, but are you actually going to get to the single best view in Greece? IMO, Athens is definitely not a pretty city.
We’re trying to spend 4-6 days renting a beachy type place, so that’s basically what we were looking after. So, you suggest the French Riviera or somewhere else??
If you can get there without wrecking your schedule and budget, I’d probably pick Greece. There are wonderful beach resorts in Greece, but they’re generally on islands — not necessarily a quick trip from Athens. Look at flying directly to the island where you find your beach resort.
If you decide on France, I’d look at Antibes. It would be great to rent a car to explore some of the interesting medieval villages and art museums in the mountains above the beach.
Thanks so much for all of your advice
Your best bets for cheap flights from Italy to Greece will be out of Milan and Rome. Santorini, Crete, Mykonos, and Corfu are some islands you can fly into relatively cheaply.
So basically, CK, fewer countries, more time in each country.
Of course, you can do both France and Greece, and drop Northern Europe (UK, Germany, etc).
As for prices…both Greece and France have become significantly more expensive in the past 10 years, but neither will send you to the poor house. You’re right that Greece will certainly be cheap*er* than France, but not cheap. Unless, prices have dropped this year, which did happen last year in the tourism sector…partly from the fiscal crisis and partly from the global recession (and reduced tourism from Northern Europe to Southern Europe in general). But with tourism arrivals spiking upward this year, prices in Greece may be heading back to pre-crisis levels.
If you need more specific advice in either country (GR or FR….can’t go wrong with either), let us know.

Thanks for all of your comments! It’s changed a bit, obviously I’m not going for a year so things will constantly be changing except that we have planned to fly in and out of Paris (is this too expensive???)
Also, the countries/cities we now plan on seeing are
France- Paris and Antibes
Italy- Rome, Venice, Tuscany
Czech Republic-Prague
UK- London
The trip will range from 21-28 days… I realized that I would be rushing too much if I went everywhere that I wanted to go. I also heard that Brussels is beautiful, but I’m not sold on it yet.
It’s GREATLY appreciated!
Does anyone have any changes/comments on the places I want to go? I don’t know how much time I should stay where and if it’s worth going to each place. I know that we were planning on renting a house in Antibes to be sea-side however, I’m not sure how warm it will be in June, so I don’t know if it’s worth it. Please let me know ANY input
Reconsider this. For a trip where you’re visiting a bunch of different places it makes much more sense to fly into one city and home from another, thereby not wasting time and money backtracking.
I’m with Augustin on the flight arrangement. Fly into London or Paris and back out of Rome (or vice versa if you find a better deal).
