Europe for Two Months!
Fri, 03/04/2011 - 01:49
Hey everyone!
In May, I’ll be in Venice, Italy, taking a course through my university, and it got me thinking: I’m already here, why not go backpacking for the summer!
I’ve been working on-and-off on my itinerary for over a month now, but I feel like it’s still too crammed. I have two months, and as this is my first Europe trip, I essentially want to go everywhere. Here’s where you guys and your lovely advice come in!
What cities should I shorten? Lengthen? Cut altogether? Any other tips/comments/criticism?
From Venice:
Berne, Switzerland (2 days)
Lucerne, Switzerland (3 days)
Zurich, Switzerland (2 days)
Fussen, Germany (3 days)
Munich, Germany (4 days)
Nuremberg, Germany (2 days) – this one is important, as my grandfather was in the nearby concentration camp for 3 years, so it needs to stay.
Prague, Czech Republic (3 days)
Osweicim, Poland (2 days)
Krakow, Poland (2 days)
Berlin, Germany (4 days)
Antwerp, Belgium (2 days)
Bruges, Belgium (5 days)
Paris, France (9 days) – lots of day trips out to Versailles, Mont St Michel, etc, hence the longer time frame
London, England (6 days) – day trip to Stonehenge, possibly Canterbury
York, England (2 days)
Carlisle, England (2 days)
Edinburgh, Scotland (3 days)
Glasgow, Scotland (2 days)
Isle of Skye, Scotland (3 days)
Orkney Island, Scotland (3 days)
Dundee, Scotland (2 days)
Glasgow or Edinburgh, Scotland – last day, to fly back to Toronto
I’ve already taken into consideration travel time between cities, so that’s not an issue (ie. I’ve accounted for any full-day train/bus rides)
Thoughts?
Thanks so much!
I am leaving from Venice, Italy and traveling for 66 days
Berne, Lucerne, Füssen, Munich, Nuremberg, Prague, Kraków, Berlin, Antwerp, Bruges, Paris, London, Edinburgh, Portree, Kirkwall, Stirling, Glasgow
Berne, Lucerne, Füssen, Munich, Nuremberg, Prague, Kraków, Berlin, Antwerp, Bruges, Paris, London, Edinburgh, Portree, Kirkwall, Stirling, Glasgow
Looks like a really good trip. Yeah it’s busy, and it may be that along the way you’ll drop something, add something else.
The day trip to Stonehenge is doable, but lo-ong. Maybe you could spend the night in Bath?
But transportation might be tricky.
I personally don’t get too excited about Switzerland, esp Zurich—there is Interlaken.
Any particular reason you are stopping in Carlisle? I was there many years ago, I just remember being really cold but you won’t have that problem.
Thanks for the tip, I’ll look into staying in Bath for a night or two.
And Carlisle and York were just stopover points between London to Edinburgh, but I’m seriously considering dropping them and just flying between the two (depending on the price), which would free up a few more days.
Thanks so much!!

Train it is! Thank you

In my personal experience, Switzerland has an absolutely beautiful landscape – I would go back there in a heartbeat. Particularly Lucerne; if you like picturesque landscapes in particular, I highly recommend not taking it off your list! The trip from Berne to Lucerne, itself, is very beautiful! I do agree though that Zurich is not all it’s cracked up to be, but if you would like to go to just say you’ve been there, than a 2 day time frame is great. Looks like it going to be packed, but also like it’s going to be tons of fun! Good luck :o)
London, Bath, Manchester, St Andrews, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Oban, Glasgow, Newcastle upon Tyne, Leeds, Liverpool, London
Well you have a good and interesting itinerary but still I feel that it includes lot of travel and less exploring. Also you need to keep in mind the mode of transport you will opt as there are loads of options like train, bus and rental car. But you need to be wise and select the best as well as the cheapest mode. You may skip any one or two destinations in order to get some more time in places which you can explore more.
Best of luck for your trip.

Depending on your interests, you might choose one place over another. I like Zurich because it is a scenic city with what I believe to be the best art in Switzerland. But it is not in the mountains. Bern is also not in the mountains and I found it less interesting than Zurich or Luzerne. It is very oriented toward government, with a lot of buildings housing bureaucracies and the legislature. It has a small interesting shopping area, more compact than Zurich. It has an art museum, but it is full of Paul Klee works, and I have not learned to appreciate this school of art.
From Venice, you could take a train to Milan, then cross the Alps to Brig, then Spiez, then stay in Lauterbrunnen (more scenic than Bern or even Luzerne), then continue to Luzerne and Zurich. That is a scenic ride. But you might consider going to Tirano, Italy, and catching a train through Chur to Zurich. That is the route of the Bernina express (an expensive scenic train; the regular trains us the same track, but cost less) that is a most scenic route. You could also spend a night in Chur, then catch a train to Luzerne via Andermatt, another very scenic ride.
Madrid, Toledo
Dublin, Dingle, Dublin
Bruges, Ardennes, Bastogne, Brussels
London
Charleville-Mézières, Reims
Thanks for the advice! This is my final itinerary:
Venice, Italy (Month of May) – Naples/Sorrento, Rome, Florence weekend trips
Berne, Switzerland (3 days)
Lucerne, Switzerland (4 days)
Füssen, Germany (3 days)
Munich, Germany (4 days)
Nuremberg, Germany (2 days)
Prague, Czech Republic (4 days)
Krakow, Poland (4 days) – Oswiecim day trip
Berlin, Germany (4 days)
Antwerp, Belgium (3 days)
Bruges, Belgium (5 days)
Paris, France (9 days) – Mont St Michel, Versailles/Chartres day trips
London, England (7 days) – Canterbury, Bath/Stonehenge day trips
Edinburgh, Scotland (3 days)
Isle of Skye, Scotland (4 days)
Orkney Islands, Scotland (3 days)
Stirling, Scotland (2 days)
Glasgow (2 days) – fly out of Glasgow
It’s still a bit fast paced, but I’m okay with that. I’m giving myself some flexibility in case I love a city so much that I want to stay longer, or vice versa.

I suggest staying in Bath (since you’re already going) and doing your Stonehenge trip from there, it’ll save you a couple of bucks and I’m guessing the bus ride will be considerably shorter.
Also, if you really like cathedrals, stop by at Salisbury, it’s absolutly worth it.
