Europe in winter
Wed, 10/27/2004 - 10:35
Ok so I leave for my first eurotrip on the 11th of November. I am an aussie chick and don’t like cold weather! What do I bring – clothing wise that is warm and won’t make me feel like a geek. I have a columbia jacket for warm day wear and a smart-casual furry jacket but what to wear at night in European winter? What should I bring for nightclubs/bars? What do the English wear to the theatre in winter – would love to wear pretty dress but cannot see it happening? and how many layers is too many eg/ spencer, skivvy, jumper and jacket? How do I keep my legs warm – please don’t say long johns?
I am incredibly excited about this trip but don’t want frostbite in the process
Many thanks

Hi Anita!!
You have to remeber Europe is not just a tiny place where everything is the same, the temperatures do vary all over!( Here in Norway it’s 1 C today, and in Rome i think it’s about 25 C.)
I dont think you need to bring long johns unless your hitting the Alps… I dont know if you are going to stay in England your whole trip, but when you are there i guess wearing jeans and a jacket will be fine. Just bring a skarf if you have one, it’s good for the wind! Don’t know what a columbia jacket is( should I??) but if it’s a really thick jacket i doubt you will need it.
-Why dont you tell me where you are going and than i can try to help you some more
Karina
Thanks for your reply. I am going to London, France, Northern Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Amsterdam and then London again. Travelling from 11/11 – 13/12. Does this help?
hey anita!
i’m heading into london too—on november 9th
do you know where are you staying or how long you’ll be there?
i’m starting at st. christophers inn village for the 1st week of my trip, and from there, who knows!! Anyways the temperature in London for november will probably hover around 48-50 degrees Farenheit, which is 11-14 Celcius or so..
it might be a good idea to bring a rain coat
I am not bringing much other than a fall-type jacket. i figure i’ll check out what people are wearing when i arrive… pick stuff up as i need it—you know?
If you are going to the theatre you can wear a dress, usually i think girls wear pantyhose/tights, black or beige to keep warm, (and keep sexy too, if ya know what i’m sayin’!) the scarf idea karina brought up is good too. man, i’ve gone out to clubs in canada when the weather is below freezing and you see girls out there in practically nothin! its crazy, but as long as the lines aren’t too long, you’re inside and you don’t have to worry about checking your coat at the door
hey.. i am going travelling exact same dates.. starting off in norway then through central europe and back to oslo for my flight.. i live in england so i am used to somewhat colder weather than you… i guess it is all about layers… i have good coat , hat, gloves etc and hope to spend a week or so in norway and it will be pretty cold i imagine… i think towards central europe just a cood rain coat will do… it never really gets too cold unless you go far north… hats and gloves are reccomended especially as you will be doing a lot of walking aropund in cities… it is better to have a fleece and a rain coat than to have a thick winter coat as you can aleways just wear fleece when cold and raincoat on top of that when raining… good luck with your travels!
