Eurotrip 2010 September
Thu, 06/10/2010 - 11:55
Hello everyone, 24 year old male from Toronto here,
Planning a 2 week trip through Europe second half of September. It’ll most likely be myself and another person, however there’s a slight chance that I might end up traveling solo. Keep in mind that last 7 or so days will be in Berlin at a friend’s place, so I wont have any hotel expenses, and very minimal food and transportation expenses.
Please advise on whether I should edit my itinerary. Primarily, I’m skeptical about the Prague portion of the trip, that is, I know its a great place, however the person I’m going with has already been there and I don’t know if my budget will permit it.
Primary goals of the trip:
Amsterdam for 2-3 days, primarily look forward to Museums, bike tours, the scenery, and perhaps a couple of drinks here and there.
Munich 2 days – Oktoberfest, BMW factory tour, scenery, and if I’m lucky a Bayern Munich game
Prague – ?
Berlin – remaining 7-9 days – friends there who’ll know what to do. Might drive down to Dresden at some point and swing by a nearby Polish town.
Please critique my plans
I am leaving from Toronto with $1000 for 16 days
Amsterdam, London, Berlin
Amsterdam, London, Berlin

You could do it, though I would trim Berlin to 5 days. Oktoberfest should be a lot of fun, but you may wan to book a hotel in advnace (it may be verging on too late already) or find a place just out of town and train it in.
“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list”
I would try to get to Prague. If your travel buddy doesn’t want to go there SERIOUSLY look at splitting up for a few days and going solo. Two weeks of the 24/7 togetherness of travel will be way more than enough for any friendship. You don’t understand how much time you spend together, often in tight quarters, until you’ve actually traveled with someone. Unless your friend in Berlin has housing that’s ultra spacious and luxurious for European cities, guest accommodations at your friend’s place will be cramped.
Am I ok financially? Is 50 Euros a day enough to be comfortable without penny pinching? (excluding hotel/train/plane expenses)
Amsterdam, London, Berlin
50 Euro is a tight budget IMO, in Amsterdam do St. Nicholaas boat club (sign up at boom chicago) they ask for a donation only , bring food beer wine smke what ever, now beers in Amsterdam are around 4-8 euro depends where you go , but may i suggest you get you beers in the grocery store (Albert Heijn) and food there too, will save you loads of money,
IMo i think 75 euro would be a better budget and thats still on the low side
Amsterdam, Munich
Well I meant an average of 50 Euros a day. As I said I’ll be spending about half of the vacation at a friend’s so my budget is more like 75 euros a day in Amsterdam/Munich and 25 a day in Berlin.
Amsterdam, London, Berlin
The Oktoberfest will hit some dents in your travel budget I would assume. Hotels and hostels all have doubled/ tripled their prices and also, most is booked out by now, so I hope you have thought about this….
During the Oktoberfest, if you will fully engage in the celebrations, a day in a tent will set you back about 100 euros (for six beers, lunch, dinner, and some Brezen in between) but depends a lot on your drinking style. You can save money by drinking & eating outside of the Theresienwiese. Or double the expenses by giving a round for the table
I noticed you will be joining the BMW factory tour at sept. 21, very good, looking forward to see you. Which other days have you planned to stay in Munich now?
It’s shaping up to be:
Sept. 18 – 20 Amsterdam, 21-23/24 Munich, 25-oct. 3 Berlin. But I still havent booked my tickets so I might end up making some adjustments, maybe pay a quick visit to friends in Belgium and France, its not set in stone yet.
Amsterdam, London, Berlin
I’ll be in Munich around that time too for my third Oktoberfest. my strategy has been to “pre-game” for Oktoberfest with tall cans sold at stores around the hostel, then go into the Theresienwiese with a head start on things.
I always travel on a shoe string, so I have been known to get creative to save money.
Cheers!
Scott
Stockholm, Copenhagen, Ghent, Paris, Barcelona, Florence, Ljubljana, Munich, Mittenwald, Rome
I’ll be heading to Oktoberfest Sept 23 × 27 solo if you want to grab a beer (or 7) – went last year and it was by far the best party I’ve ever been to.
London, São Rafael, Munich
cool lets keep in touch i arrive from Amsterdam on the 23rd and heading back to Amsterdam for another week before i head home,
Amsterdam, Munich
Myself and three friends from Canada are travelling about the same time as you. Also, we seem to be hitting a lot of the same destinations. Here is our schedule:
Amsterdam – Sept 17, 18, 19
Berlin – Sept 20, 21, 22,
Prague – Sept 23, 24, 25,
Vienna Sept 26, 27,
Munich – Sept 28, 29, 30, Oct 1, 2
Fly Home October 3
This is my first time travelling so I can’t really offer you a lot of travel advice based on first hand experience. But at the same time, I am a strong believer in making the most of your time and seeing as much as is ‘enjoyably possibly’. First off, spending time in Munich for the biggest beer festival in the world is always a good idea. Second, although I have never been to Prague I have been told from many people that it is really something amazing to see. Finally, although Berlin is probably pretty amazing itself, think of the opportunity cost of spending a week in Berlin and forgoing all the other amazing places to be!
I personally wish I could take more in myself and at times question the trip we have planned. I would have really liked to go to the UK, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, etc. but thought it may have been too much to take in in such a short period.
Anyways, good luck planning your trip……either way it will be good times!
Maybe we’ll see you in Amsterdam!?
I think after visiting Berlin, Prague and Munich I would skip Vienna. It’s a pleasant city but I think it doesn’t add much to your trip. I you fly back out of Munich I would spend a few days in Italy after Prague, and day less in Munich. Best days for Oktoberfest would be the weekdays however, so you might want to do Oktoberfest first, then a few days Italy (Florence, Roma, or Venice)

I should probably mention that my itinerary has changed a little bit. I’ll be arriving in Amsterdam morning of 18th and leaving on the 21st, so we can definitely meet. However, from there I’ll be going to London for 3 days instead, followed by Berlin.
I should also be in Munich around the 28th
