Eurotrip Planner turns 1 year old
Mon, 01/04/2010 - 12:58
The Eurotrip Planner went live just over a year ago now and it has been adopted very quickly. Including both Published and Unpublished trips, you have entered more than 25,000 trips this past year.
With 25,000 trips entered, I thought you may be interested in some statistics about eurotrips, so here goes:
The average length of a eurotrip is 32 days.
The average budget for a eurotrip is $3,482.
The average daily budget for a eurotrip is $155.
(note: the reason these numbers do not seem to add up is because not everyone has entered a budget, etc…)
The top 20 cities visited are:
1 Paris, France
2 Amsterdam, Netherlands
3 Rome, Italy
4 London, United Kingdom
5 Barcelona, Spain
6 Berlin, Germany
7 Venice, Italy
8 Prague, Czech Republic
9 Madrid, Spain
10 Munich, Germany
11 Athens, Greece
12 Florence, Italy
13 Dublin, Ireland
14 Vienna, Austria
15 Brussels, Belgium
16 Milan, Italy
17 Zürich, Switzerland
18 Frankfurt, Germany
19 Nice, France
20 Budapest, Hungary
The top 10 countries visited are:
1 France
2 Italy
3 Germany
4 Spain
5 United Kingdom
6 Netherlands
7 Greece
8 Switzerland
9 Czech Republic
10 Austria
I would like to thank you all for the valuable feedback you have given us over the past year to make this application better and better. We will continue to improve the application to give you the best experience we can. Let me know if there are things you would like it to do that it currently doesn’t do.
Cheers…

Will – congrats and thanks for being the driving force behind a tremendous tool!
It’s a great application and the Eurotrip community has voiced it’s approval through the adaption of the tool.
I want to add my thanks to the terrific Moderators and contributors whose valuable advice and contributions make all this work.
We are looking forward to adding more functionality including booking in the near future – our goal is to get as many people Eurotripping as possible!
Keep up the great work everyone!!

Santorini, Mýkonos, Corfu, Rome, Ibiza, Barcelona, Amsterdam
I think it is a wonderful planning tool! I love that it incorporates google maps so you can zoom down to street level in one city or out far enough to see the entire trip on the map. I remember when this was first introduced and I was really amazed and I also really like the updates that have been done to it so far as well (hostel booking feature, railpass feature, etc). Good job!

It still has some kinks to work out, IMO, but no matter what it is an invaluable planning tool

Thanks for this wonderful tool! I can’t imagine planning a long trip without it.

Ya its been slowly improving over the past year.
I recently launched a fix so the select passes that ‘Railsaver’ returns can be added to the cart without having to remember what countries were recommended. This should help a lot in the booking process when you need to buy your rail passes.

Absolutely! The connection with Railsaver is great
Bath, Haltwhistle, London, Füssen, Freiburg, Stuttgart, Speyer, Nördlingen, Salzburg, Hallstatt, Salzburg, Rome, Ostia Antica, Athens, Delphi, Athens
Its worth noting that if you buy your rail passes through the trip planner you will be getting the best possible price anywhere.

If I need to buy a railpass, I would definitely buy here first unless I needed to buy other travel products with it, like a backpack or moneybelt (Rick Steves gives 20% off in his travel store with railpass purchase). But if it’s only the railpass I need, I will buy here, no doubt. It’s like $2-5 cheaper per pass than the official price, right?

There is an additional rebate for Eurotrip members who book through the planner too!

Ooh check that out, $14.50 off in rebates! (in addition to the $3 cheaper price than eurail.com) Rick Steves does have the same original price for the pass I just looked at (5 day/3 country select pass=$312) but that $14.50 would probably be greater than the savings I would get on stuff in his store… hmm. He does send his travel skills DVD with the order though…. man, y’all are making it very hard to decide! (good job being so competitive with major sites, btw)
Good thing I don’t have to make a decision any time soon lol.

Since you are leaving from Atlanta I’ll throw in a free hot dog at the Streatery – it is one of my other businesses – as well as a free phrase book (12 European languages) and a free Eurotrip Rail Map. You don’t need a travel skills DVD – just keep planning on Eurotrip and you will learn more than what RS can teach

I just found this site the other day after looking for something similar by ways of a travel application or software. Pretty much everything I was looking for with the added advantage of a community. I have to say, its pretty ingenious and I’ve already taken advantage of the hostel offers and will probably buy my train passes through this site. Congratulations on turning 1 year old.
haha, eurotrip, you’re trying real hard, I’ll give you that!!
Unfortunately, I don’t live in Atlanta, it’s just the nearest major airport (I live about an hour and a half drive south down I-85, in Alabama) but thanks for your generous offer!!! I never say no to free stuff though, so I will have to check out a Streatery the next time I am up that way

The Eurotrip Planner has been a wonderful tool for planning our upcoming 2 months in the UK & Europe. The ability to slide the days around makes fine tuning just so easy. It’s great to be able to change your mind about a destination and decide to spend a shorter or longer period there by simply typing in a revised number of days.
But now a couple of requests –
1. It would be good to be able to select a block of destinations and move them up and down the list as a group, rather than having to move them one by one.
2. Would really love a text box in each destination for making notes, suggested things to do, train times etc. Maybe there could be a choice as to whether these appear in the published version when viewed by others.
Undoubtedly there are many other requests out there and maybe these are much too difficult to program, however, just had to put in my 2 cents worth.
Well done, team!
I remember when this was first introduced and I was really amazed and I also really like the updates that have been done to it so far as well (hostel booking feature, railpass feature, etc). Good job!
that’s pretty cool
The trip planner isn’t working for me. Any ideas why?

I am looking into some issues that have been hard to track down. If you have a chance to tell us what the symptoms are in the Bug Tracking forum that would be helpful.
Thanks…
