Eurotrip transportation advice
Wed, 07/08/2009 - 19:59
I am wondering if anybody could help me decide which means of transportation is easiest from place to place on my Eurotrip. Here’s the itinerary:
LONDON
PARIS
AMSTERDAM
BERLIN
PRAGUE
ROME
ATHENS
ISTANBUL
Thanks!

If that is your order here goes
London-Paris Train
Paris-Amsterdam Train
Amsterdam-Berlin Fly unless you get one of the super cheap train fares (6hr train ride)
Berlin-Prague train
Prague-Rome flying
Rome-Athens flying
Athens-Istanbul flying
London, Leeds, Manchester
Thank you very much for the advice, I appreciate it! But is there some kind of train pass that we could get for those first four legs? I know people usually take trains during their entire Eurotrip and get passes but in my case I’m not.
Check the railsaver tool or rail tickets under the “bookings” tab at the top of the page. A 3 country select pass for France, Germany, Benelux with a point to point ticket for the part of the trip from the Czech border will probably be the best deal if you follow Howie’s recommendation on air travel.
I’d also take the train from Amsterdam to Berlin (overnight train if you want to save time) unless flying proved significantly cheaper than a day of the railpass. Any flight takes nearly 5 hours when you figure getting to/from airports, check-in time, security time, flight time so a 6 hour train ride, city center to city center isn’t really much longer and it’s a lot less hurry-up-and-wait hectic.
Thanks for the input!
I just have a quick question for OldLady:
I am looking at Eurail pass possibilities and I plan to use the “Youth” fares. I am aiming to use Eurail from Paris—Amsterdam—Berlin—Prague (Eurostar probably for London—Paris). I have never used Eurail before and I am confused by their wording; what does “5 Days Within 2 Months” or “10 Days Within 2 Months” actually mean? Thanks.
We use Eurail all the time. The answer to your question is that the number of days that you can use the pass for in any given period of time. E.g 10 days in 2 months, means that you can you your pass for any 10 days in a 2 month period, they dont have to be consecutive days. Hope this helps!!
Yes, this certainly does! Thanks!
Notes on Eurostar:
1. Eurostar is the only train that crosses the channel, so you’re taking Eurostar or you’re flying or you’re taking bus or train plus ferry.
2. Eurostar is not covered by your railpass. A railpass gives a discount on Eurostar, but the discounted rate with a youth pass is almost exactly the same as the youth fare, so won’t really help. Look for cheap leisure fares and other specials at www.eurostar.com
Thanks!
