There is a link on this site’s homepage regarding calling home. It is a shameless ad for AT&T. That is the most Expensive way to call home. Seeing as this site is primarily for budget travelers I am offended.

The cheapest way to call home from Europe is to purchase a prepaid calling card with a PIN number after you get to your destination country. These cards are great for about $5 US you get from 30 to 45 minutes talk time to the US.

They are sold in Tobacco shops or magazine stands all over Europe and you usually have to specify 1. a PIN card and 2. the country you wish to call.

This method worked for me in the following countries:
UK
Holland
Italy
Germany
and Czech Republic.
