What is your favorite Art museum in Europe? I haven’t seen the Prada yet…but otherwise I’m a big fan of,

Tate Modern – London
Le Louvre – Paris
Victoria & Albert – London

The Guggenheim in Bilbao is not just a frivking amazing art museum, its one of the best representations of modern architecture ever.
Also, any gallery in Venice is cool, you can find some gems in the smaller ones. The Uffizi is one of my favorites in Florence

speaking of which, I saw a really good guggenheim museum in Venice…and good call on the Uffizi micahj123…forgot to add that one!

What about the Vatican…do you think that could go under the art museum catagory? Has some of the most famous murals in history!!

I have never been to the vatican, but it does have a great representation of Renaissance and neo classical art. I would defeintly consider it a museum including the magnificent architecture.

How could I have forgotten the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, as well as the Rembrandt museum which has some classics. I think the best art city in Europe is Berlin. Especially if you like modern and post modern works.

Another great place I enjoyed was the Presidential Palace in Mexico City, where you can look at Diego Rivera’s murals about Mexican history…

I have always loved Rivera’s work. There are many gallerys in Paris that exhibits his stuff. I think the Musee D’orsay has some. Also, if you are truly an art freak, you should go to Arles, and sit in the exact Cafe that Van Gogh used for "Night Cafe". Sort of a freaky experience especially after a few drinks…..

Paris: Musee D’Orsay
Venice: Guggenheim
Madrid: Reina Sofia
Prague: The Mucha Museum
Berlin: everything on museum island!
Vienna: Schmetterling Muzeum (oh c’mon, it’s cute!)
Amsterdam: The Van Gogh Museum
Florence: The Uffizi

They all rock.

Agree with the Van Gogh museum in Ams…superb stuff!
I also love the Tate in London and Liverpool…and of course the Louvre in Paris and the Accademia in Venice.

I’m freak for museums. I did an art history study abroad in Paris, & thus spent weeks in museums & loved it. Other than the Louvre there, I loved the Centre Pompidou & the Gustav Moreau studio mueseum – really neat, tons of unfinished works & sketches & everything. I was never really familiar with his work, but the exhibition of the paintings in his home & the actual feel of a working studio upstairs with works in varying degrees of completion was awesome. In Amsterdam I really dug the Stedelijk. Those have been the only two cities where I was able to spend a good amount of time in musuems, hopefully this round I’ll see MUCH more.

I visited the Guggenheim in Bilbao last week. I made a detour on my driving to visit it and I’m glad I did. However, I think I would have been disappointed if I had to go out of my way much or spend a day to get there. It was nice but not as impressive as many other European art museums. The works range from modern to classical. The building itself is a work of art. Audiophones are included in the price. It actually was not too hard to find from the toll-road, I just followed the signs.

I have to be the odd one out here and disagree on a few choices, but one in particular: The Louvre. Although it has many great works, it is so terribly uninviting, overwhelming, and unnavigable, it turns me off every time. I think I’m allergic.

My favs include:
Musee D’Orsay (Pairs)
Musee Marmottan (Paris)
Belvedere Galleries, especially the Upper Gallerie (Vienna)
Picasso Museum (Barcelona)

But by far the best museum in the world is not in Europe, but in my home town, if I may say so, the Met. Of course comparing the Met to most museums is like comparing apples and oranges, but it does put the rest to shame.

I was severely disappointed by the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. The D’Orsay and the Met have all the best pieces.

I’m going to Spain and Italy in the next few months, so hopefully I will have a few more to add to the favorites list after that.

Ah the Met is fabulous. But I think that it is not better than other art museums. I mean it really depends on what kind of art you like, and the atmosphere you feel comfortable in. But seeing Starry Night up close for the first time does bring a tear to your eyes…
