Hi,

I will be landing in FCO to start my exploration on Rome. Most of my time will be spent around Ancient Rome, which I believe is Coliseum and surrounding area. )I am still checking maps and making sure of this).

But my first question on this quest is this.

I am planning to book my hotel or hostel in the area around coliseum, etc. I see that it is 46 mins ride from FCO airport. Are there any trains/Subway/Underground from FCO to this area or taxi is the only option?

Thanks for your time.

Regards,
Shiyam

Two options that are far cheaper then a cab
Airport express train(About 11 EUR) to Termini Station and then metro(2 stops on line B) or taxi(not sure how much a taxi would cost)
Local train to Stazione Ostiense (5,50 EUR) and then metro (short walk) or taxi(not sure how much that would cost though). It’s two stops on the metro line B there to the Colosseum station
Cheers
Howie

“All roads lead to Termini.” I’d follow Howie’s option 1. However, I’d seriously look at a hostel in the Termini area — you can easily get to any place in Rome and there are some decently priced places in the area. Anything near the “favorite tourist areas” has a fair chance of being overpriced.

I agree with the latter and should have said that in my post. Have you ever tried it via option 2 OL? A friend of mine mentioned it hence why I posted it.
Cheers

No, we stayed very near Termini, which turned out to be a godsend for a day trip to Pompeii and getting to FCO for a very early flight home. It all worked out for us by accident. Since Termini seems to be the hub for all transportation and there’s good “tourist information” available there, that seemed like the easiest and fastest option for a newly arrived tourist.

I read about other, cheaper, options after we got home. I think there’s an old post from someone who needed to get to FCO very early — before the first train. There were suggestions that involved other train stations. Option 2 would probably be an excellent, and cheaper, answer for Shiyam’s specific question. I think there are also airport buses that might work well.

Are you the Jr. to the Stockman?

You guys are just great. I liked option 1 personally as I feel safe with the Metro. Main reason is Rome’s Metro map looks similar to Toronto’s subway map (3 lines) Smile.

I am really nervous as this is the first time I am going on a vacation to Non-English speaking countries – Italy (Rome, Naples, Florence, Venice), France (mostly Paris) and Switzerland (Zurich, Geneva). I am glad i found eurotrip.com

OL, which hotel did you say in termini ? was it around 50 Euros. Looks like the charge is per person. right ?

We’re glad you found Eurotrip, too! Trust me, you’ll have no trouble navigating in “English only” in these places — although it’s actually easier in smaller countries or countries with more obscure languages. As a Swede once told me: Nobody outside of Sweden is going to learn Swedish so we have to learn something else — English is the most universal second language.

The hotel I stayed in near Termini was the Domus Aurea, bookable from this site: http://www.eurotrip…. It’s not really a budget place, but generally a good value if you want to splurge on a three star. It looks like it’s out of your price range although they seem to advertise specials at $79. Last year they had doubles at $100 total ($50 each) in the off season, but a quick check of late October shows $92 each ($185 total) for a double — probably at least $75 less than most comparable hotels in Rome, but still expensive.

It looks like it is quite out of my budget. But if I am not finding any thing comfortable, now I have a fall back plan. Thanks again !

There are dozens of hostels in Rome, most near Termini. I’ve heard good things about The Yellow, Alessandro’s Palace, and Funny Palace. I like to check out hostelworld because of the reviews, but there’s a hostel booking feature on this website that you can also use (but no reviews, just ratings).
