Flight Question
Thu, 02/01/2007 - 00:58
My plan is to fly into Rome and then visit some Italian cities and then from there fly to London. What is the best and cheapest way (safe, too) to get there?
Then from there I will likely train to Paris, Amsterdam, then back to London, and my question is how cheap will it be to then fly back to Rome to hit the tail end side of my round trip ticket?
I checked and it is too costly to book Des Moines —> Rome and London —>Des Moines as separate tickets.
What are the best sites to get those inter-European flights for really cheap?
1. Try a “multi-city” itinerary rather than two separate tickets. You can fly Des Moines-London, Rome-Des Moines for less than $1,000 in May. Which is a pretty good deal for shoulder season.

As you’ve already found, ryan air has very cheap flights between London and Rome — Just allow plenty of time to get from Stanstead to Heathrow or Gatwick — an extra day would be a good idea.
Edit: I found how to do the multi city, thanks oldlady.
www.kayak.com is good for multi-city searches
If you need to fly from Italy to London, keep in mind that both easyjet and RyanAir flies into stansted, London. Years ago I got a very cheap round trip flight from London to Pisa for about $80. It will be slightly more expensive now, but still worth checking out. Also, check out Delta/Alitalia for multileg flights. Two years ago I flew them from NYC to Florence with a stopover in Rome. I had a full day in Rome before I had to catch my flight to Florence. I’m sure you could extend your time in Rome to a few days. The ticket ended up being cheaper this way. Multileg tickets can often save you money, and also flying into one airport and out of another cna also be a big saver. I flew out of venice.
If you’re going from London to Paris then Amsterdam, then back to London, it might get complicated and a bit pricey. Unless you fly from Amsterdam to London (which you can certainly do) you’ll have to go to either Brussels or Paris in order to take the Chunnel back to London. London is a huge hub, so you’ll always find the most flights going from there, but maybe you can find a flight from Amsterdam to Rome.
EasyJet flies both to Rome and Venice from London Gatwick, which is pretty convenient.
