Polkagrisar (polkagris for singular) are a candy, similar to candy canes, that were invented in Gränna, Sweden in 1859 by Amalia Eriksson. More information can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polkagris.
Gränna is populated with many polkagrisar stores but Franssons is the largest. Most stores, like Franssons, have a window where you can watch the candy being made. The standard flavour is peppermint, just like a candy cane, and bags of it are sold throughout Sweden. However, I was only able to find the really cool flavours like strawberry, blueberry and “troll” in Gränna. (Note: these are not the strange mint hybrid flavours like we get with candy canes in the states. Strawberry is just strawberry flavoured, no mint at all and the rest of the flavours are the same.) When traveling through Sweden, I highly recommend stopping by Gränna to buy some of the candy. =)
