Hi,

I have applied for a working visa for the UK and am hoping to hear the outcome shortly.

I am looking at flying in to London for a night next month and meeting up with friends to take a train to Paris to join a tour.

After that I hope to travel Europe for a couple of months before returning to the UK to find work.

I am wondering if, given I don’t know when I want to return, I can book a one-way flight to London given I have a working visa (hopefully) and can prove onward travel to the tour in Paris? Or, am I better off buying a flexible return flight and possibly cancelling the return trip, all to ensure I can get into London?

Would a one-way flight hinder my chances of entering the country?

Maybe it would be better to fly straight to Paris?

Does anyone have any advice to offer in relation to this?

Thanks! Smile

I’m pretty much in the exact same position.. Would be very interested in the answer to this also. My thinking is that if it’s a work visa, they won’t be expecting you to leave the country, and so a one way ticket would be fine.

Get an open ended ticket that is valid for a year, this will increase your chances at getting a working visa for the UK. Also, it would help if you have work in an industry that needs employees such as teaching or nursing.

But yeah chances will be increased with a return ticket.

I say get the open return ticket. I went to England for a couple of days from Portugal and was going to take the train to Paris (was not sure how long I was going to stay in London for) and the immigration officer asked a million and one questions about when I was planning to return home and she advised that it would be better if I purchase a ticket out of England before I arrive so that I can show it to the immigration officers.

I am leaving from New York City with $2500 for 10 days

If you ring up the Home Office in the UK they will advise you against booking a one way ticket (I heard it many a times when I was organising and getting my WHV). It is much much more easier to book an open return ticket.

Thanks guys!
I ended up getting a great deal on an open return ticket which can be used for up to one year.
So took that option just to ensure entry. My visa came through 3 working days before I leave!! Phew!
Cheers. Smile
