Getting into London from Heathrow
Fri, 01/26/2007 - 16:49
Four of us will arrive in London in the middle of March. We would like to find the cheapest way for us to get into London from the Heathrow Airport. Someone suggested getting a 3 day visitor’s pass and taking the tube in. I went to the website to check on the passes, and it said that the pass was only good in the first 2 zones, but we could use the pass on the bus to zone 6, where Heathrow is. Should we take the bus to a tube station in zone 2 then ride the tube in from there?
Thanks, Rick
Regardless, the tube is probably the easiest way to get to central London. You’ll be on the Picadilly line at Heathrow, and it will take you right into the heart of London, Picadilly Circus.
I would get a TravelCard at Heathrow (or an Oyster – whichever is best for your length of stay) for Zones 1 & 2, and pay the necessary supplement to travel from Zone 6. I have a feeling the bus would take a long time on this route. But if you really want to do it, take a look at the Journey Planner at http://www.thetube.com .
Thanks for the tips.
I went to the website to find out what the Oyster card is, but I am still clueless. How does it work? Does it save you money on the tube?
I am in the same boat, planning a trip to London end of May 07 and saw somewhere that the Oyster Card is the cheapest way to get from Heathrow to London but don’t understand all of the options. Do not plan to hang around London long at all so am primarily interested in airport to London. Can you help?
It costs a little more but I like the express train to Paddington Station, then the tube is just yards away. With luggage it was awesome. Get on right after clearing customs, went from the train to the tube in a few steps as well. Str8 to Picadilly or other metro stops. 13.50 pds each way. They are running a discount the next 2 days. 15 minutes vs 1 hour on the tube. Don’t use to save money, but use if you want the extra time. www.heathrowexpress.com
The express or the slower heathrow connect (6.90 gbp 28 minutes) is great if your heading around paddington station or have alot of luggage and are willling to grab a taxi from paddington. Once you need to transfer to the tube the advantage is lost especally if you are going somewhere that would be on the picadilly line or within a short transfer from it. As far as travelcards go a 3 day travelcard I think the 3day card is still issued on paper not oyster. Depending on how much you plan to travel getting an oyster may work out to be about the same. Oyster is price capped to the 50 pence less than the cheapest day travel card for the zones you have traveled which would be 4.60 for off peak travel(travel after 0930) in zones 1-2 and 6.20 for zone 1-6 off peak travel. Depending on how much you are planning on traveling and if you are traveling before 0930 it can be about the same if you get a 3 day travelcard or just a pay as you go oyster. If your traveling before 0930 I would suggest getting a 3 day travelcard since it’s valid durning peak hours

If your just going into central london and leaving right away and leaving via bus/train I would just buy a cash fare which is 4 gbp (zones 1-6). If you are planning on spending a full day and are arriving after 0930 I would buy a day travelcard zones 1-6 which would cost you 6.70 gbp. The oyster isnt worth it since it would be 6.20 for the day plus the 3 gbp oyster card one time fee.
cheers
