So I had no expectations on Ghent or Belgium to be honest. I really hadnt heard of anyone who has been there. The only thing I did know was they had killer beer. (killer mean good).

I got to Ghent from Amsterdam via Train. Which was really simple and not too expensve 25 Euros for the trip. It only took about 2 hours to get there.

I had lined up 2 couchsurfing places for 3 nights here. And had planned to go over to Brugge for a day.

Ghent has this really fun student vibe going on. I stayed with a cool student on my first night there. And it has a big street with about 50 or so bars (that might be an exaggeration but there were plenty).

There are also these cool maps and guides in most belgium tourist places called Use-It guide which is ideal for youngsters. It gives you the low down on cheap places to eat, drink, things to see, and how to blend in with locals. It is highly recommended, go to the tourist office and ask for a Use-It guide. It showed you were to get a 1 euro ham baguette which was actually stocked filled with ham and veges and was amazing.

Ghent has that medieval look to it. It has the cobblestone streets, some amazing churches, a Belfry and a castle. All worth looking at. The Adoration of the Lamb is in St Bafts church. But It costs some money to see it, instead go see the copy in the back of the church, it is nearly identical.

The climb up the belfry was easy and was interspersed with offshot rooms. Not bad for a few euros.

If its a really awesome and sunny day. Grab a cheap baguette and a few drinks. Then go laze about on the Graslei. It is a pretty little canal side area where a lot of locals hang out when it is sunny.

The other great thing is that it is really simple to get around. And it is definetly not far to get from place to place.

Definitely check it out if your in Belgium.
