going from Krakow to Kosice (and back)
Mon, 05/23/2011 - 02:33
Hello everybody; I am planning to go and run kosice marathon next october and will land to krakow; my guild book was speaking about a direct train krakow-kosice by night but after speaking with polish and slovak friends it seems this train don’t exist any more; so big problem for me!!! Does everybody know a way to reach Kosice from krakow in a direct way if possible, by bus or train. Thank you in advance for helping me.Best regards
While there isn’t a direct overnight train, there is still one reasonable option by train. Train D402 leaves Krakow at 21:57. It arrives at Bohumin at 1:00 and connects with R433 at 1:44 which arrives in Kosice at 6:53.
Try www.eurolines.com for bus schedules.
Thank you very much for your good and quick information; do you know if it’s possible to buy the train ticket on internet? Can I buy one ticket krakow-kosice or 2 tickets : 1) krakow-bohumin and then 2) Bohumine-Kosice; and in case you know the fare for going and back, please inform me (but don’t worry if you don’t know I will check by myself).I hope I don’t make you too much disturbance and say thanks again for your efficiency. Regards

Good job; I feel not worrying more because of you! So thanks for all, i appreciate your good cooperation. Good night.Best greetings
This season the connection between Slovakia and Poland east of Tatras is the worst in history, practically nonexistent. This has to do with the last year’s floods that have taken away a railway bridge in southern Poland on a route to Slovakia. The bridge was reopened this year, but the timetable shows no signs of at least summer trains, as it did in previous years. The only possibility is to take a detour through Bohumin, Czech republic as oldlady suggests, or to get as close to the border as possible and walk through it (easiest done in Lysa Polana). BTW, what day of the week and what time do you arrive?
If you have any questions about Prague or Czech and Slovak republics, ask me.
If you only want to search train or bus connection within Czech&Slovakia and/or to neighboring countries, use www.cp.sk or www.idos.cz search engines. For domestic transport, they also show prices.
Thank you Papyr for this good explanation, in fact i am supposed to travel on 28 sept (wednesday) and would like to leave krakow from 8 or 9 pm.
At this time , as you say very truly i think no other possibility than crossing to Bohumin, and I think I will do that, unless you have a better idea?
Best regards
P.S. I don’t know about Polish segment’s price, but the 2-journey ticket from Bohumin to Kosice and back costs EUR 31.20 when bought at the cash desk in Bohumin – the amount will be payable in Czech crowns, but they should accept EUR currency or credit cards even at one in the night. Just remember to ask for the “CityStar” ticket, the CityStar is the keyword to get 30 days validity instead of 4 days and the price 31,20 instead of 41,20.
That buys you a second class seat. If you want to get at least some sleep, you should buy yourself a couchette or a sleeper. If you want to be comfy, buy them right at the boarding in the Bohumin, you will pay 6 or 9 EUR for a couchette (6-bed or 4-bed compartment) or 12 EUR for a 3-bed sleeper. If you want to save a bit, then wait seated until the train crosses the Slovak border, then move to a sleeping coach in the first Slovak station, Cadca. This way you’ll pay domestic sleeping prices, which are even lower: 3.80 EUR for a 6-bed couchette, 5.30 for a 4-bed couchette, 6.20 for a 3-bed sleeper. But you will only get 4 hrs of sleep from Cadca to Kosice.

Hi Papyr,
It seems you are the Bible of Slovakian railway!!! I was thinking to buy the whole journey krakow-kosice and back in Krakow railway desk, do you know if it possible? Do they plan to make reparation of the direct way krakow-kosice (like a few years ago with direct night train)? Nothing to see with the subject but do you know a good place where to stay in Kosice? Thanks for your good advices; keep me informed.Bye-bye
I am pretty sure the international cash desk at Krakow-Glowny (Main station) is able to issue the ticket. However, they will probably be unable to sell you a sleeper ticket (which has to be bought at the carriage door anyway, so no trouble there). The question is, what will be the price difference. First ask for a price of return to Kosice via Bohumin, then just to Bohumin, add 31.2 euros to it and compare.
I have no idea whether regular passenger service will start again on Krakow-Kosice route (precisely, on its 20km segment from Muszyna, Poland to Plavec, Slovakia). I am trying to intervene in writing so that it starts again. Actually, posts like yours will make a good weapon in the discussion.
Accomodation in Kosice: To be honest, I have no personal experience. My mother lives in Presov, 30 km from Kosice and I always sleep there when visiting that region. The only time in my life I slept a longer time in Kosice was when I was a kid – I was in hospital there. Generally it shouldn’t be bad. However, if you find something on the net and want to know how good an address in Kosice that would be, I’m ready to answer.
