good friends, good times, GOOD FOOD?!
Thu, 01/05/2006 - 16:24
any places to eat that are must-dos?? Like the best itlalin restaurant in Rome or some hole-in-the-wall place in Spain that we’d never think to stop at but is awesome? These are the cities we are for sure going to be stopping in:
London
Paris
Rome
Barcelona
Prague
Munich
Cesky-Krumlov
Vienna?

For a good curry in London, head over to Brick Lane (near Aldgate Tube Station)
Check out Trattoria dell’Omo in Rome…its on 18 via vicenza…thats hole in the wall..family run…very good…service erratic.
In Madrid try Casa Mingo…it’s like an asturian ciderhouse that specializes in roasted chicken….get the chicken and some of the sidra (sparkling or flat) they bottle on the premises. Its on paseo de la florida 34…..if you want to try excellent churros con chocolate…go to chocolatería san gines….its on pasadizo de san ginés #5
From my travels last summer, I can highly recommend the following restaurants:
Vienna:
Rosenberger’s – a cafeteria style restaurant, right off the main street, near Stephansplatz. Much like Movenpick Marche – pick your own food from different stations.
Zehner Marie – a typical "heuriger" restaurant, a bit of a hike from downtown, on Ottakring Strasse. No tourists – it’s "buffet style" – you pick what you want from behind the counter, and pay for it by weight. Very Austrian!!!!
Centimetre – a chain of restaurants, favoured by university students. You can get a Jurassic sized schnitzel for around 5 euros. And they serve beer in 3 and 5 litre containers!!!
Schweizerhaus (at the Prater amusement park). Fantastic beer garden with great food – try the pork knuckle.
Cesky Krumlov:
Hospoda Na louzi (Kájovská 66) – small typical restaurant, attached to an 11-room hotgel. Typical Czech fare, with mains running from $2 to $4. Great beer – a ping of Eggenberg will set you back less than a euro. About a 3 minute walk from main square.
Krcma v Satlasvske – a medieval style bbq cellar. Geat fireplace, where they do cooking over an open flame. My favourite by far – mixed grill is superb.
Prague:
Great Thai restaurant on Rámova 5 (street). About a 5 to 10 minute walk from main square.
Pivovarksy Dum brew pub – big portions, and they brew their own beer (try the coffee beer!!!). Located on Lipova 15 – near metro stop, or about a half hour walk from main square.
Munich:
Hofbrauhaus (5 minutes walk from Marienplatz) – infamous beerhall where Hitler started his rise to power. Today, very touristy, but tons of fun. Big portions, great atmosphere.
Hope this helps!!
Mmmmm….Trattoria dell’Omo was very good. Inexpensive and really good ravioli.
In Cesky Krumlov the best food is at Hostel 99. I stayed at Travellers hostel because the night life is better and more lively but hostel 99 is the place for food. If you get the chance go check out the Horror bar. When I was there I hung out with this crazy Irish guy named Dominick and Shlegs. They got a bar named after them called Dom and Shlegs Bar.
Serbia generally has good food, mostly meat.
here are some typical dishes and places where to find them in
