Great hikes
Thu, 10/23/2008 - 02:57
My girlfriends and I are backpacking through Europe this summer. I live in Alaska and we are all for challenges……. any suggestions…….
Well, what do you like? What is your budget? Any countries in mind? Are you looking for something in specific? We need more information if you want other peoples’ help. How long are you going? How many people? Any passions for art, or history or food or dance or anything really?
Personally, I would tell you to go to France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and any country I did not mention. There is so much to see and do. You have to be more specific.

There really is no budget….. the only rule we set is no hotels. We’ve purchased 1st class rails passes already for the 3 months and now are just getting some insight to the best places people have gone and seen.
Swiss Alps. Go to Interlaken for a month, and you’ll have something different do do every day
Bath, Haltwhistle, London, Füssen, Freiburg, Stuttgart, Speyer, Nördlingen, Salzburg, Hallstatt, Salzburg, Rome, Ostia Antica, Athens, Delphi, Athens
My favourite hiking area in Europe is the High Tatras, on the border between Slovakia and Poland. The Slovak side is nicer and less crowded, generally.
Of course Switserland is great too, but it’s a lot more expensive. And there are so many chairlifts and cable cars going everywhere that you feel like a fool for hiking sometimes.
There are marked and mapped hiking trails almost everywhere in the non-urban parts of Europe. We hiked in the Alpes Maritime, only a few km from Nice and the bustling Riviera. You can hike marked and mapped trails around Vence, St. Paul, St. Jeannet, etc. The ancient hill towns are uniquely interesting and the views are great.
Any suggestions on day hikes in Bavaria or northern Italy? I’m not experienced so mountian terrian wouldn’t be a good idea
I’ve not done it, but I’m sure there are some good hikes around Bolzano, Italy. Beautiful small city just on the other side of the Alps (the Dolomites) from Austria. I think it was about a 4 hour train ride from Munich, if memory serves. But hell, if you’re going to be in the area, why not just take a jog over to Switzerland? Great stuff over there…

Thanks for the tips! Sorry it has taken me so long to respond….not getting updates via email
I would love to go to Switzerland. My dad went to school in Bern many moons ago! Anything good near there?
Interlaken is about an hour away from Bern if I recall correctly. The town itself is alright, but the main point is to go down into the valley directly south of it. Just pick any of the towns halfway up a mountain in the Lauterbrunnen valley and you could spend a week hiking all over the place from there. I stayed in Gimmelwald.
