im trying to decide what rail pass to buy. i was just going to buy an unlimited one month one, then when that ran up, go to greece and the different islands. however, i see that minoan ferries offers free/discounted ferries to rail pass holders. i have ??s if anyone has done this before….

1) if i buy a round trip ferry ticket from venice to patras and back…and my rail pass (one month unlimited) is on its last day the day i buy my tickets….can i still get free ROUND trip tickets (plus the surcharges and all)? or does my rail pass have to be valid my entire stay in greece and valid during my ferry back to venice?

2) is the free ferry from italy to greece valid with any rail pass? does it matter if i get the 10 days in 1 month, or unlimited two months?

3) if i got 10 days in 1 month – does the ferry ride count as a travel day?

THANKS IN ADVANCE Smile

if you want to stretch your railpass, take a look at the 10 days in 2 months offer. (flexi?)  that way you can buy single tickets for shorter, less expensive trips, and save your railpass for ferri discounts like this.
i found this link to france’s rail line

http://www.voyages-sncf.com/dynamic/_SvHomePage?_DLG=SvHomePage&_CMD=cmdHomepageUK&WB=HP

http://www.eurail.com/ <<<check out the timetable page and you’ll find links to all the participating rail lines.

hope this helps

The overnight ferry passage counts as one rail day — You can choose either arrival day or departure day, so pick the one when you’re taking a train either before or after the ferry to avoid and extra day.

Here’s some useful past threads, on Greece-Italy ferries:

On the first one, oldlady has made a great list of what ferry companies to go for in which ports.

On the last thread, I never answered Nadrazi’s question, so here it is (might be useful to someone else):

Yes, you do have access to almost all of these.  They are in the public domain.  With the exception of some lounges that require a more expensive ticket, everyone has access to the pool and bar decks, the food courts, restaurants, and stores and movie theaters if there are any.

One ferry company I don’t recommend (if it is still around) is: Hellenic Mediterranean Lines.
