Gregory Deva Pack
Fri, 03/11/2005 - 15:47
Anyone have this? Pros and Cons? Good durability? I am female- 5 foot 3 about 120 lbs- so average build- this is the pack that the guy at my camping store reccomended- but i figured I would check with you guys. Any other reccomendations if this one isn’t good?
Let me know
Norah

I saw some good reviews of it online, but in more of an outdoor use context (not sure if it matters). The only possible negative I see about it is that it’s top-loading. A pack with a front-loading panel can be more convenient, but I’ve managed with a top-loading pack before.
Hi,
I have the Gregory Deva 60 pack. I’m female 5 foot 9 and had no problems with it at all. Good durability so far, and I’ve put it through a lot (dragging, overstuffing, etc). It is top loading which can be a hassle if you’re not organized, you just need to rotate things occasionally. It also has a lot of outer storage compartments so finding small or frequently used things wasn’t that big of a deal. It’s built for girls; my back never hurt and it was comfortable. I’d recommend it. Good Luck!
I have a Gregory Elektra, which is the women’s backpack a size up from the Deva and I just love it. I just got back from a camping trip with it and the side-loading capacity it has makes me so glad I decided to by it and not the Deva. You can always pull it in and make it smaller if you don’t fill it up, so it doesn’t really feel that much bigger. Gregory backpacks are just made for women and they fit so nicely, especially in the hips. I’m a huge fan.
I nearly bought a Gregory Deva recently, as it was the only pack I could find that fit me properly (I’m only 5’1" and most packs have too long a torso length, but the XS version of this one was perfect). I decided not to bother in the end, because it was expensive and I figured I’d just use my old, ill-fitting pack one more time, which ended up working out fine. Still, this seems like a good pack. The main drawback is a lack of hydration compatibility or a detachable daypack. If this isn’t an issue for it, go for it.
But never decide on a pack online. Always go to a store and try on backpacks and put weights in them and test them out to see how they fit and feel. You may be surprised at how a pack that seems "good on paper" actually fits terribly, and one you’d never thought to consider winds up being your choice. Go to a store with a good selection (like REI in the States or MEC here in Canada) and be prepared to spend some time testing and trying on.
Superior quality and usually a price to match. You can get by just fine with less. But the suspension system they have is excellent.
I decided on the Electra instead of the Deva for a couple reasons- the detachable day pack- side loading option- and the extra size- and get this- my good friend just got a job at REI (the camping store here) and he can get me 30% off! WOOHOO
Thanks for all the advice
