I hope to go sailing this summer and recently ran into this site:

http://www.thetravel…

Does anyone have experience with these things, good or bad? I’d like to know about the ultralight in specific. The weight and volume are ideal, but it looks so flimsy! I know there’s a tested weight limit but… I’d still be holding my breath first time I got in.

Hammocks are better the stuff of south seas’ imaginings, say rocking languourously between palms on a Jamaican beach your every whim catered to by beach boys proferring bud (not nearly as good as nederwiet) and Cuba libres, but neither quite comfortable nor supportive, and ultimately unnecesary. Shipboard, one wishes for merely someplace dry and warm, a moment of privacy from the not always welcomed intimacy of the crews’ cramped quarters, simple rest from the arduous chores of simply sailing the boat. And modern day sailing vessels are not exactly spacious, no room for a hammock – these are not the days of de Ruyter and the sea gypsies raiding the English on capaciously broad bilged ships of the line. Dooie!

It’s not for sleeping in, and I would use it on deck in downtime. If it would get really warm then I could sleep on deck – with the first watch (00:00 – 04:00) you don’t usually sleep more than chunks of 4 hours anyway.

It might help to mention at this point that I sail tallships – squareriggers.

Really it’s so small and light that there’d be no reason to leave it home. I was just hoping someone would have used the ultralight hammock they offer there. I’m kind of turn between that one and the parachute stuff hammock. The last one is double the price, but also looks a lot sturdier..

I have a travel hammock (brookstone) that I LOVE! It doesn’t pack as small as I like for foreign travel but I don’t hestiate to toss it in my bag camping or hiking around here. It’s super easy to get up and way comfy. Plus mine is canvas and just thick enough to keep the bugs from biting thrue and I can wrap up in it and sleep all night sometimes.

I recently found a really nice small cheap hammock, you know a compact style one for camping… But it turns out im 2.5 kg’s too heavy for it… TIME FOR A DIET!

I found the Jobek hammock in a local shop, but I’m not light and its limit is too close for comfort (of mind) for me. So I’m probably going to order the ultralight one… (as well as going on a diet Wink ) shame that even with the nice euro/dollar courses the $16 shipping still make it expensive. :-/

oddly enough i was given a parachute nylon hammock from these guys for a gift and it is fantastic! I had previously owned an ultra light purchased from them a couple years ago. the UL is really good, a little small for really big guys, but only 10 oz..nice for my g-friend and little kids. can’t say enough about the single and double parachute, nice and big, SUPER strong. worth the money!
