Help! i need help in understanding about railpasses
Thu, 03/01/2007 - 01:41
Hi! Am going to be travelling to Europe in March and i can’t really figure out the rail pass system. Have been reading about it, quite understand but still need to hear from experience travellers..
Here’s my tentative plan:
Frankfurt – Amsterdam
Amsterdam – Paris (3 nights)
Paris – Frankfurt (4 nights)
I have read that there is consecutive passes and flexi pass. I would actually prefer unlimited train travel passes so that i can move around easily from city to city within the country. Which do i select then?
Hopefully, someone out there can help me out!!! Thanks in advance….

Check out railpass pages at You’ll need a 3-country pass – $264 youth flexi for 5 days.
You can add up the individual prices of point-to-point tickets yourself using the time-and-cost map – $294 for FRA-AMS-PAR-FRA. That however is just an estimate.
The pass gives you 2 extra travel days. Use them for any extended outings. Buy p2p tix for your shorter journies.
There are other ways to do this and shave a dollar here and there but you are looking for convenience, right?
I prefer using www.railsaver.com to the Rick Steves maps for comparing point to point tickets to a railpass. I think it’s more accurate about the prices to buy the tickets in Europe and it’s part of the group that sponsors this forum….
Follow the “I have a good idea of my itinerary” route and click “I prefer purchasing railpasses (to point to point tickets) ‘only if it saves money.’”
You’re only making 3 train trips, but they’re all expensive ones so a 5 day “select” pass for Germany, Benelux and France may be a betteryour best deal.
I’m not sure what you mean by wanting “unlimited” train travel. The select pass will allow you to choose 5 days (6th day free if you buy it now) when you’re want to travel. You don’t have to pick the days in advance. Just mark the date on the railpass right before you get on the first train you take that day. A rail day is midnight to midnight (with a special provision that allows you to take overnight trains and only count as one day if the train leaves after 7:00 PM) and you can take as many trains as you can fit in during that 24 hour period. Try reading the stuff about “using your railpass” in the “info center” at www.railpass.com
